The Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for identifying and screening Emergency Department patients experiencing painful conditions who may benefit from evidence-based non-pharmacological pain management interventions. This position supports initiatives aimed at reducing opioid exposure while improving patient-centered pain management through education, alternative therapies, and research activities.

The individual will work closely with emergency medicine physicians, nursing staff, research personnel, and community partners to deliver non-pharmacological therapies, identify patients at risk for opioid use disorder, facilitate appropriate referrals, and support ongoing clinical research efforts within the Emergency Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Screen and identify Emergency Department patients with painful conditions who meet eligibility criteria for non-pharmacological pain management interventions. 

  • Administer established non-pharmacological therapies, including music therapy and iPad-based mindfulness applications, in accordance with study protocols and departmental guidelines. 

  • Provide education to patients regarding pain management alternatives to opioids and available supportive resources. 

  • Identify patients who may be at risk for Opioid Use Disorder and facilitate referrals to the Pain Board, Addiction Medicine services, or other appropriate resources. 

  • Participate in clinical research activities, including patient recruitment and enrollment, informed consent procedures, data collection, database management, and preparation of study-related reports. 

  • Maintain accurate and timely research documentation in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements. 

  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives related to pain management and opioid stewardship within the Emergency Department. 

  • Set up, maintain, and monitor inventory of supplies and equipment required for administration of alternative pain management therapies. 

  • Complete and maintain all required institutional training, certifications, and continuing education relevant to the role. 

  • Participate in scheduled team meetings, educational sessions, and study-related activities to review interventions, outcomes, and data collection processes. 

  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, social workers, addiction specialists, and research staff. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in Psychology, Social Work, Public Health, Health Sciences, Nursing, or a related field preferred. 

  • Experience providing direct patient care in a hospital, clinic, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), behavioral health, or similar healthcare setting. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage patients experiencing acute pain or psychosocial stressors. 

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical record systems. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous experience in clinical research coordination or research participant recruitment. 

  • Experience working in Emergency Medicine, pain management, addiction medicine, behavioral health, or substance use disorder services. 

  • Knowledge of non-pharmacological pain management strategies and opioid stewardship initiatives. 

  • Certification or training related to motivational interviewing, behavioral health, addiction counseling, or research coordination (e.g., CCRC) is preferred. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

  • Frequent walking and standing throughout the Emergency Department environment. 

  • Ability to interact with patients in a fast-paced acute care setting. 

  • Occasional lifting and transporting of supplies and equipment necessary for non-pharmacological interventions.
