Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.The primary purpose of Location & Surveys is to serve as support services in providing engineering analysis, mapping and other data for the design of transportation facilities and the acquisition of property for the construction of transportation facilities.
We are looking for an Engineer II who will be responsible for researching and analyzing more complex survey related procedures, policies, or problems in field surveys (route, construction, GIS).
In this role you will:
•develop and provide a high-level field and/or office training to engineers and advanced level survey technicians to all departments within NCDOT. The position receives instructions and in turn, trains their local staff in the learned- techniques (train-the-trainers).
•utilize your strong knowledge of all field survey hardware including various robotic and non-robotic total stations, Mobile and Terrestrial LiDAR, different GPS/GNSS equipment, digital levels, and data collectors and associated software used in route location, construction, and GIS surveying, as well as associated analysis software including MicroStation CADD, Geopak, Trimble Business Office, and ESRI products
•provide a strong understanding of field survey procedures in route location, construction, and GIS surveying, including the background engineering knowledge necessary to explain why certain procedures must be performed, what accuracy levels must be achieved for various types of surveys
•develop statewide standards to be used in NCDOT field and/or office survey procedures as well as the analysis of this data.
•provide analytical evaluation and resolution of more complex survey related problems when encountered by survey crews
•apply strong knowledge of gravitational anomalies and evaluation of data using higher-level statistical programs such as Least Squares Analysis.
•employ your high level of experience in all aspects of surveying theory and advanced analysis to ensure success.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927 - $111,871
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience with the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and Route Location Surveying including geomatics engineering.
- Experience with field survey procedures in route location, construction, and GIS surveying.
- Experience with Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), specifically using Microstation V8i/Geopak as well as Open Roads Designer.
- Experience interpreting and communicating complex geomatics engineering design concepts and techniques.
- Experience training technicians and other engineers in surveying procedures and survey equipment operation.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
