Description of Work

The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks of installation, preventative maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of campus
mechanical, electrical, plumbing-related equipment, and commercial appliance systems. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe,
reliable, and efficient operation of facility infrastructure and also provides assistance to other staff as needed to meet school property and
program needs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position is responsible for ensuring the school campus is maintained in a high state of readiness. This role performs skilled work across multiple trades—including plumbing, mechanical, and structural systems—while supporting preventative maintenance, repairs, and campus improvement initiatives. The position also plays a key role in maintaining safety, functionality, and security across campus buildings and infrastructure.

**This is an anticipated vacancy effective 7/1/2026.**

***This is a full time, 12-month permanent position and works day shift; Monday to Friday; eight (8) hours per day.***

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain campus-wide chilled water systems, distribution loops, pumps, motors, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Service building heating systems, steam distribution systems, steam-to-hot-water conversion systems, and process controls.
  • Repair and replace air handlers, fan coil units, exhaust systems, ventilation equipment, ductwork, and plenums.
  • Maintain and repair pumps, bearings, belts, pulleys, motors, gearboxes, compressors, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnose equipment failures and perform corrective maintenance on mechanical systems.
  • Fabricate, modify, and install mechanical components and support systems as needed.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend repairs or equipment replacement.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair campus electrical systems and equipment.
  • Repair electrical controls, relays, switches, motors, lighting systems, and associated components.
  • Install and replace wiring, electrical devices, and equipment in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Assist with electrical upgrades and facility improvement projects.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance to maximize equipment life and reliability.
  • Assist with general maintenance, repair, and construction projects across campus.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations and facility service calls.
  • Assist with equipment moves, installations, and facility improvement projects.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Follow all safety regulations and maintain a safe work environment.

Management Preferences:

  • Experience using American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn ASL.
  • Experience with plumbing, mechanical systems, and/or general construction practices.
  • Experience diagnosing and/or repairing a wide range of facility-related issues.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, electric meters in performing duties.
  • Advanced skill in reading and interpreting electrical/electronic schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, mechanical blueprints; equipment manuals; and work orders.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

• May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Minimum Education and Experience

Required Minimum Education and Experience:

• High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and

• Two (2) years of progressive experience in general maintenance operations;

or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education. North Carolina School for the Deaf operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June.

Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round. Pursuant to House Bill 11, all employees, hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1, 2024, are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C of the General Statutes. This includes any transfers to NCSD from another state agency who are currently considered Chapter 126 (SPA) employees.

Compensation is dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.  Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
