Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Athletics Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of our K-8 youth sports and athletic program. This position is perfect for someone who is passionate about youth development, highly organized, and energized by a fast-paced sports environment. You will work closely with the Athletic Coordinator to ensure all practices, games, and events run smoothly, safely, and align with our school's values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Coaching, Officiating & Program Support

  • Coaching & Instruction: Actively assist with coaching duties and help administer specialized Sports Clinics to develop student skills.
  • Officiating: Serve as a referee during games, ensuring fair play and adherence to rules.
  • Coach & Volunteer Supervision: May be asked to help guide, support, and supervise coaches and/or volunteers to ensure program alignment.

 

Event & Game-Day Operations

  • Game Management: Assist with scorekeeping, clock operation, and overall crowd/gym management to maintain a positive environment.
  • Logistics: Assist with the setup and teardown of athletic equipment for practices, home games, and tournaments.
  • Serve as a welcoming point of contact for students, families, visiting teams, coaches, and spectators.

 

Family Liaison

  • Communicate proactively, professionally, and promptly with families regarding any matters related to student safety, behavioral incidents, or sportsmanship expectations on and off the court/field.
     

Student Supervision & Safety

  • Active Supervision: Supervise students between the grades of 1st and 8th grade during practices, clinics, games, and other activities.
  • Dismissal Safety: Accompany students and maintain supervision after activities until they are safely picked up by a parent or guardian.
  • Ensure the absolute safety and well-being of all students during games and events.

 

Facility & Equipment Care

  • Gym Supervision: Monitor gym use to maintain a structured, safe, and positive environment.
  • Sanitation & Storage: Maintain the gym as a clean and safe space. Responsibilities include keeping all gym and sports equipment thoroughly sanitized and correctly stored after each use.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact effectively, professionally, and positively with youth, parents, colleagues, and school staff.
  • Program Alignment: Deep knowledge and understanding of the athletic program's goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Digital Literacy: Demonstrated computer literacy skills, including proficiency with Google applications, internet navigation, and other basic data systems.
  • Work Ethic: Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team when needed.
  • Education & Experience: One year certified from a college or technical school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Core Competencies: Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Youth Experience: Previous experience working directly with youth is highly preferred.
  • Language Skills: Being a bilingual speaker (English and Spanish) is highly preferred but not required.
  • Certifications: Must possess or be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.

 

Working Conditions

  • Environment: The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate, but can at times be loud during games, clinics, and events.
  • Physical Demands: Requires regular walking and occasional climbing of stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Schedule: Typically, 15–25 hours per week, primarily during after-school hours with occasional weekend tournament coverage.
