Make a difference as a Police Services Technician! In this role, you will provide comprehensive, non-certified law enforcement support to the Durango Police Department. Your responsibilities will include responding to public requests, investigating incidents, preparing detailed reports, and assisting with a wide range of law enforcement tasks and administrative duties. You’ll also play an important role in supporting sworn officers, maintaining public safety, and upholding municipal ordinances through direct interaction with community members.

What You’ll Do in This Role: 

  • Facilitate the transition of interested candidates into a Police Officer position with the Durango Police Department. 
  • Respond to calls for service from the public at the police station, by phone, or in person.
  • Investigate and prepare reports on cold criminal incidents, as well as civil and traffic incidents.
  • Investigate private property and on-roadway non-injury accidents; take witness and victim statements; issue citations and write reports.
  • Investigate cold felony and misdemeanor offenses, including evidence collection, report writing, and assisting with follow-up investigations. Work with a certified police officer for interviews or arrests in cases involving a suspect.
  • Provide administrative and technical support for sworn officers and other police department employees; deploy and utilize measuring, safety, and warning devices or equipment.
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public; assist other agencies in responding to public concerns and reports.
  • Communicate with reporting parties and offenders; issue approved violation warnings or citations and conduct follow-up visits to verify compliance with prior violations.
  • Assist investigators in crime scene searches; retrieve and preserve evidence for court proceedings and provide testimony in court as necessary.
  • Prepare background information on liquor license applications and inspect/verify vehicle identification numbers. Manage and confirm liquor postings.
  • Patrol or travel via foot or vehicle as needed for incident response or to identify and correct municipal ordinance violations. Provide information to violators and the public regarding applicable laws and ordinances. Locate and document graffiti, and coordinate with victims for graffiti removal or coverage.
  • Enter, modify, and retrieve data in various databases regarding stolen, recovered, and found property, drivers’ licenses, vehicle registration information, and warrants; receive, interpret, and forward information to the appropriate certified law enforcement personnel.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

You Have:

  • A high school diploma or GED. 
  • Two or more years of customer service experience, preferably in law enforcement, code enforcement, or a related field. 
  • A valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record for the past three years, or the ability to obtain a driver’s license upon hire. 
  • Knowledge of city services and municipal organizational structures as they relate to law enforcement. 
  • Understanding of evidence procedures, including safe handling of hazardous or evidentiary materials.
