Salary Range: $19.05-$26.07 (+$10-$20/hour in benefits)

This is an open examination. To be eligible for the position, applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or possess a G.E.D, have a valid driver's license, and be a U.S. Citizen or have a valid permanent resident card.


SHIFT: Monday-Friday; 6:00 am to 2:00 pm

General Statement of duties
:           
Rides on and/or follows behind a refuse truck, goes from property to property collecting refuse and/or recyclables materials and returning it to the truck for disposal.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:        
This position requires heavy physical work.  Therefore, employees in this class must be in good physical condition.  Repetitive work is expected to be performed independently, with supervision needed for unusual problems.  Duties must be performed efficiently.

Examples of Work:   
Serves as a laborer.  Responsible for discarding household trash, yard waste, and/or recyclable materials and placing containers back properly.  Assists in route development and strategy for efficient route completion.  Assists in directing the crew if others on the route are less experienced.  Responsible for safety of crew, driver, and traffic in general.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Physical ability to work outdoors in extreme and adverse conditions is a must.  Ability to carry out oral and written instructions with minimum detail.  Aptitude for logistical coordination of services.  Must possess adequate communication skills and deal tactfully with citizens of the public.  Must have general knowledge of city streets, neighborhoods and landmarks.

Acceptable Experience and Training:        
High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.SUBSEQUENT TO THE FILING OF THE APPLICATION, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE, LOCATION, DATE, AND TIME OF THE EXAMINATION.  

The examination will be a two-part exam. The first part will be a written examination. The written examination will contain questions on the following subjects: mechanical comprehension, following instructions, map reading, reading comprehension, safety, vocabulary understanding, street signs, basic math, public relations, and other related areas.  The second portion of the examination will be a physical agility to be held at a later date. The exact date and time will be provided to candidates who pass the written exam. 

The physical assessment will be as follows: Candidate must make 40 stops in 10 minutes or less walking from Sanitation Truck A to Sanitation Truck B, alternating between trucks. At each stop, the candidate will pick up two 35-lb cans and one 14-lb bag with two hands, lifting each of them one by one to the truck bed and returning it to the ground. This will be a Pass/Fail test. Again, the physical exam must be completed in 10 minutes or less.  If you successfully pass both portions of the examination, you will be ranked on the eligibility list according to your time on the physical agility.

REPEATING AN EXAM
Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.
 
RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 – Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
   
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training, shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.

Pursuant to Civil Service Rules, applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
