Job Description

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology Fraunhofer UMSICHT develops process engineering solutions in the field of carbon conversion (next-generation biofuels, recycling technologies for plastics and composite materials, biochar), low-emission combustion and firing technology, and the provision and storage of process heat. It also has expertise in waste and resource strategies and life cycle assessment (LCA). With a focus on process engineering and plant construction, it supports clients from the project idea through pilot plants and demonstrators to market launch.

Would you like to help us create a sustainable world? We are looking for new talent!

At the Sulzbach-Rosenberg site, various pyrolysis processes are used to thermochemically convert organic waste streams – from both biogenic and synthetic materials – into pyrolysis oils and platform chemicals. This work investigates how the selectivity and yield of high-value target products in the pyrolysis of plastic waste can be increased through the targeted use of reactive gases and catalysts. The aim is to identify optimal process conditions through systematic laboratory experiments using different feedstocks, reactive gases and catalysts/adsorbents.

Be part of change

  • Literature review
  • Processing and analytical characterisation of various PUR waste streams
  • Planning and conducting systematic laboratory experiments (DoE) by varying feedstocks, reactive gases, temperature and catalysts/adsorbents
  • Analytical evaluation of the experiments and products
  • Documentation of the results and derivation of optimal process conditions for scale-up to pilot plant scale

What you contribute

must have:

  • A degree in applied chemistry, technical chemistry, chemical engineering, process engineering, environmental engineering or in a comparable subject area
  • A strong willingness to work independently on the research topic
  • High level of reliability, ability to work independently and strong organisational skills
  • Very good written and spoken German (C1 level) and good written and spoken English (B2 level)

nive to have:

  • Experience of working in a laboratory and on pilot-scale test facilities
  • Experience in the field of pyrolysis and heterogeneous catalysis

What we offer

We are committed to creating an inspiring working environment in which all employees can develop. To this end, we promote and value the uniqueness of each person and create a culture of respect, openness and appreciation in which everyone is welcome:

  • Teamwork at eye level: an open-minded team at a future-proof employer where you can contribute your own ideas. New Work, diversity and inclusion as well as cooperative teamwork are central components of our culture.
