DESCRIPTION
The substitute school nurse provides school nursing services to students, staff, and school visitors under the direction of the cluster nurse, school nurse, health specialist/manager, and school administrators. The substitute school nurse practices school nursing in accordance with the State of Maryland Nurse Practice Act and professional standards of practice.
The substitute school nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates school health services for students, families, and school staff ensuring compliance with health services policy and procedure.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all qualifications below to be considered for this position.
- Associate’s degree or higher
- Current Certification in First Aid.
- Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR).
- Registered Nursing License (RN).
- An active license to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland Current
- CPR certification
- Current First Aid certification
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills Ability to relate to children, parents, educational and medical personnel
- Computer skills and experience
ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures the delivery of safe school health services to students and staff
Provides basic first aid to students and staff and makes referrals for additional care when indicated in collaboration with the cluster nurse
Administers medications and treatments to students as ordered by the physician
Clarifies physician orders and writes procedures for treatment in consultation with the physician
Utilizes the nursing process to assess student’s health needs and develop appropriate plans of care
Maintains confidentiality and accurate and appropriate records
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in health promotion and accident prevention activities for students and staff Informs the cluster nurse/school nurse/health services specialist/manager of concerns
- Monitors and reports environmental health concerns, health and safety issues
- Maintains confidential information in compliance with nursing practice, state and federal regulations, and school board policy
- Maintains an active licensure in nursing and related certification as appropriate
- Performs other duties as assigned

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:
Compensation
This is a temporary position. The compensation is $297.92. Rates of pay may be reviewed on our website.

Pre-Employment Requirements
