Job Description

Role Title: Lead Engineer – Electrical Systems Analysis

We are Rolls‑Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once‑in‑a‑career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

The Electrical Systems function is responsible for defining and delivering the electrical infrastructure that underpins the SMR power station. Electrical Systems Analysis plays a critical role in supporting concept development, design maturation and technical assurance across the plant lifecycle.

About the Role:

As a Lead Engineer – Electrical Systems Analysis, you will provide technical expertise across the lifecycle of electrical systems, with a particular focus on leading system studies and defining analysis methods to support robust engineering decisions.

You will develop and apply electrical system models, performing both static and dynamic studies to assess system performance and support concept selection, design development and substantiation. Your work will directly support verification, technical assurance and safety case activities through the production of clear, defensible technical evidence.

This role operates as a technical leadership position within the Electrical discipline, providing guidance, oversight and coaching to engineers while contributing to multidisciplinary design integration across the SMR programme.

We’ll Need You To:

  • Develop and maintain electrical system models to support analysis and design maturation
  • Perform and review electrical studies, including steady‑state and dynamic system analysis
  • Support concept evaluation, requirement validation and design decision‑making
  • Produce high‑quality calculations, assumptions registers and substantiation reports
  • Present analysis outputs and recommendations at design reviews
  • Identify and communicate risks, uncertainties, assumptions and design margins
  • Act as an intelligent customer for specialist analysis delivered by partners or suppliers
  • Support verification, technical assurance and safety case development activities
  • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to other engineers

Key Skills Required:

We know there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you meet around 75% of the criteria below, we’d love to hear from you:

  • Strong experience in electrical power system analysis across HV and LV systems
  • Experience developing, using and interpreting electrical system models
  • Experience performing studies to support design development and substantiation
  • Knowledge of electrical sub‑disciplines such as protection, earthing, generation, distribution or battery systems
  • Strong understanding of analysis tools, codes, standards and regulatory requirements
  • Experience using analysis software and producing robust technical outputs
  • Experience with data integration, modelling consistency and traceability
  • Ability to use scripting or automation to improve analysis efficiency (desirable)
  • Understanding of systems‑engineering principles, including requirements and interface management
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to stakeholders
  • Proven technical leadership capability, including reviewing outputs and mentoring engineers

Experience within nuclear is beneficial; however, candidates from other highly regulated industries such as Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Automotive or Oil & Gas are equally encouraged.

Qualifications:

  • Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)

Location:

Hybrid working with one of the following as your primary site:
Derby, Manchester or Warrington.

Salary and Package:

The salary band for this role will be between £60,000 – £78,750 dependent on the skills, values and knowledge you bring. There may be flexibility in exceptional cases, reflecting the technical depth and leadership responsibility of the role.
