Job Description

Under direct supervision, the Bio Medical Intern supports the Clinical Engineering/Biomedical Services department while developing foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in biomedical equipment technology, healthcare technology management, patient safety, equipment maintenance, and service documentation. This internship is designed as a structured learning experience for individuals interested in biomedical equipment technology, electronics, clinical engineering, healthcare technology management, or a related technical field. The intern observes, assists, and performs assigned tasks based on demonstrated competency, level of training, and department need. Work is completed under the guidance of experienced biomedical equipment technicians, department leadership, or an assigned preceptor. The Bio Medical Intern is not expected to function independently as a biomedical equipment technician. The role supports skill development through supervised exposure to general medical equipment, preventive maintenance, safety testing, troubleshooting, documentation, customer service, and regulatory practices within a healthcare environment. Essential Job Functions • Assists with minor equipment support activities under direct supervision and within the scope of assigned training and demonstrated competency. • Learns to identify common equipment issues and appropriately escalates concerns to the assigned preceptor, biomedical technician, or department leader. • Assists with equipment rounds, equipment location, equipment cleaning, transport, staging, and return-to-service preparation as directed. • Learns and supports accurate work order documentation, service history updates, inventory tracking, and other department recordkeeping requirements. • Observes and participates in communication with clinical departments regarding equipment status, service needs, follow-up, and appropriate escalation. • Assists with maintaining parts, supplies, manuals, test equipment, and department workspace organization. • Gains exposure to vendor service coordination, equipment lifecycle support, and equipment management program processes. • Follows department procedures related to infection prevention, electrical safety, patient safety, equipment handling, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment. • Participates in assigned training, competency activities, department meetings, and learning check-ins. • Maintains confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate conduct when working in patient care areas, staff areas, and department spaces. • Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, Code of Conduct, compliance expectations, and service standards. • Meets mandatory organizational and departmental requirements applicable to the internship role. • Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the learning objectives and operational needs of the department. • LEARNING OBJECTIVES • At the completion of the internship, the Bio Medical Intern should demonstrate progress toward the following learning objectives: • Describe the role of Clinical Engineering/Biomedical Services in supporting safe, reliable, and effective patient care. • Demonstrate basic understanding of biomedical equipment technology and healthcare technology management principles. • Explain the purpose of preventive maintenance, safety testing, calibration, operational checks, troubleshooting, and repair documentation. • Demonstrate awareness of electrical safety, infection prevention, hazard communication, patient safety, and regulatory expectations related to medical equipment. • Accurately complete assigned documentation within department systems or tools, with guidance and review as needed. • Recognize common equipment concerns and appropriately escalate issues based on urgency, risk, and department procedure. • Demonstrate professional communication with biomedical staff, clinical departments, vendors, leaders, and other customers. • Understand the importance of equipment uptime, timely response, customer service, and clear communication in a healthcare setting. • Demonstrate accountability, curiosity, teamwork, adaptability, confidentiality, and attention to detail. • Identify potential career pathways and continued education opportunities in biomedical equipment technology, clinical engineering, healthcare technology management, or related technical fields. Minimum Qualifications Education • Minimum High School or GED • Preferred Current enrollment in, completion of, or demonstrated interest in a biomedical equipment technology, electronics, electrical engineering technology, mechanical technology, information technology, healthcare technology management, or related technical education program. Experience • Interest in biomedical equipment technology, healthcare technology management, electronics, clinical engineering, or a related technical field. • Ability to follow safety instructions, department procedures, and supervision requirements. • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational expectations. • Ability to complete required onboarding, education, and competency activities. • Ability to communicate professionally and work respectfully with patients, visitors, staff, leaders, and vendors. • Equivalent combination of education, experience, and demonstrated interest may be considered as it relates to the duties, learning objectives, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position.
