
Component Processing Technician

LifeShare Blood Center is seeking a Blood Component Processing Technician to join our operations laboratory team. The Component Tech will process and prepare blood components from whole blood units, label and record all products prepared. Using a centrifuge, the Tech will manufacture appropriate products based on the needs of the organization and customer orders. An integral member of the hospital services team, the Tech helps to ensure a safe blood supply is available at healthcare centers in our community when needed for traumas, therapies and treatments.

Reporting to the Components Supervisor, and working collaboratively as a member of the hospital services team, the Component Tech will integrate LifeShare’s mission and values into daily decisions, behaviors and actions. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, dependable and punctual and has effective organization and communication skills. They demonstrate a positive approach toward donors, customers and other team members and have a passion for service to our community.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be dependable, punctual and have effective communication skills.
- Must demonstrate a positive approach toward customers and other staff members, acting in a highly professional manner at all times.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of donor or patient information at all times.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS / ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is generally performed in a laboratory setting; requires routine presence in the lab.
- Must be able to perform duties which require standing or bending for long periods of time without relief.
- Must be able to work irregular hours, often in excess of 8 hours per day, week-ends and holidays.
- Must be able to be "on call" on a regular basis and to return to work when required.
- Must be able to work with needles, scissors, blood bags, human blood, and collection equipment and work in a fast paced environment.
- Work involves potential exposure to infectious diseases from blood and blood products.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
LEVEL II: All of the above, plus
- Requires 6 months of blood components processing experience in the LifeShare lab and meet or exceed all position competencies and departmental quality standards.
- Performs boxing, labeling, and shipping of recovered plasma and Grade B.
LEVEL III: All of the above, plus
- Requires 12 months of blood components processing experience in the LifeShare lab or 2 years of external laboratory experience.
- Provides leadership and guidance of Component Tech I, II in the absence of Supervisor.
- Calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots equipment.
- Performs component manipulation and release for labeling blood products.
- Equilibrates, samples, inoculates, and initiates documentation of platelet units for BacT culture screening. Properly prepares, splits and labels platelet products based on qualification.
- Assists with preparation and labeling of blood components as required to ensure timely processing of red blood cells and plasma products.
- Applies unit and component holds in the computer to maintain effective control of blood products not meeting defined criteria or to identify need for additional testing or review, including dicard of positive test units.
