Job Description




BASIC FUNCTION:  The Chief Custodian II provides leadership, in cooperation with the building principal, in providing for optimum custodial services in the building, including direction of the custodial staff and a share of custodial duties.   
Supervises and participates in the general cleaning of the school building. Requests and oversees maintenance needs of the building.

 PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists the Facilities Supervisor in the selection, assignment, and scheduling of the custodial staff.
  2. Directs the training and orientation of members of the custodial staff.
  3. Maintains the electrical, plumbing and heating equipment in the school plant in good operating condition.
  4. Maintains grounds, lawns, and play equipment in safe and attractive condition.
  5. Assists in snow removal.
  6. Checks all fire and safety equipment in the school and reports all violations to the supervisor or principal.
  7. Establishes and supervises proper maintenance of vehicles or gasoline powered equipment used within the building site.
  8. Checks school building as required on weekends and holidays as directed to observe proper operation of mechanical equipment and security of the building.
  9. Requisitions and receives supplies and equipment and maintains necessary inventories.
  10. Performs minor maintenance tasks as outlined in the position guide for custodian.
  11. Assumes responsibility for the general security of building.
  12. Other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to chief duties at the end of the line.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Same as qualifications of a custodian.
  2. Ability to read basic operating instructions, write reports, and maintain written records.
  3. Ability to operate and maintain gas boilers.
  4. Ability to effectively operate a network computer and computerized EMS system.
  5. Must hold a chief custodian certificate (120 hours); be in process of obtaining it, or a commitment should be made to obtain chief custodian's certificate within a specified time limit.
  6. Prefer four years of successful experience as a custodian and/or custodian fireman.
  7. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted.
  8. Must be able to pass a Basics Skills Test with a satisfactory score.

*** Positions in our facilities department require physical activity. Prospective employees are encouraged to check with their medical provider to ensure they are able to meet the physical requirements of the position.

These physical requirements include:

  • A tolerance for repetitive lifting, carrying, bending, squatting, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching overhead
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. from floor to 36" shelf and 40 lbs. to shoulder height
  • Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to climb a 6 ft. ladder
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for an entire shift when necessary
  • Ability to operate machinery

The district reserves the right to review and adjust the physical requirements for the position as needed and will communicate changes to employees.  The district will follow all procedures and policies in accordance with the Leave Office regarding fit for duty examinations.
