Job Description

The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Army Research Directorate conducts foundational experimental research at several experimental facilities to guide the development of lethality & protection technologies. This research also provides significant support to the acquisition community. To fulfill this mission, there is a requirement for senior fabrication experience and leadership in experimental fabrication.

Experimental Fabrication SME II

The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Army Research Directorate conducts foundational experimental research at several experimental facilities to guide the development of lethality technologies. This research also provides significant support to the acquisition community. To fulfill this mission, there is a requirement for a subject matter expert in experimental fabrication.

As the Experimental Fabrication SME II, you will in coordination with ARL research engineers, independently fabricate and assemble a wide variety of complex, non-standard experimental prototypes, structures, and fixtures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Preparation involves design, fabrication, and machining using variety of specialized equipment such as CNC/manual fixed and sliding headstock lathes, wire/plunge edm’s, CNC grinders, and CNC mills.
  • Mentor junior experimental fabrication technicians.
  • Provide recommendations and implement improvements to the facility to enable state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.
  • Incumbent must follow all safety regulations and use proper protective gear or equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences
  • 5 years experience in technology design and development of hardware systems or subsystems;
  • 2 years experience designing, developing, and testing in RDT&E directly related to the PWS; higher degree may substitute for years of experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience in advanced fabrication and machining techniques to include the use of specialized equipment necessary for precise component and assembly prototype manufacturing. 
  • Expertise in developing and using CAD/CAM Software to build precise parts
  • Experience in the fabrication of small-arms weapon components, fixtures, axis-symetric components
  • Experience in conceiving and developing new approaches to improve part quality
  • Pass all required training deemed necessary by the ARL safety office and facility manager, which requires familiarity/understanding with all sites and SOPs for every site within the branch.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Job duties require a significant amount of physical labor associated with setup and teardown of equipment and material at test sites.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Work often involves prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, or stooping.
  • Work is occasionally performed outdoors exposing incumbent to all types of weather conditions
  • Job duties will require the need to machine and handle depleted uranium, while following the applicable safety standards developed jointly with the Radiation Safety Officer
     

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Ability to obtain a Secret clearance is required.

LOCATION OF PERFORMANCE: DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD

WORK HOURS: Expected level of effort is full-time (40 hours/week).
