Job Description
We are looking for a DevOps Cloud Native (Must: AWS & Terraform) to join the team. This role is key to supporting and growing our cloud infrastructure reliability, with a focus on AWS services, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD tooling.
The ideal candidate is not a traditional sysadmin who moved into DevOps, but rather a developer by background who has gravitated toward infrastructure automation. You understand how applications are built and how they connect to infrastructure, and you can own and share opinions on new solutions using best practices.
What You Will Do
Cloud Infrastructure
- Design and deploy cloud infrastructure that is secure, scalable, highly available, fault tolerant and self-healing on AWS
- Provision, configure and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure defined as code using Terraform
- Perform infrastructure cost analysis and optimization
- Ensure configuration and compliance with configuration management tools
CI/CD and Automation
- Lead and grow the CI/CD practice working closely with Development, QA and other production teams
- Design, manage and maintain tools to automate operational processes for deployment, monitoring and analysis of AWS infrastructure
- Bring automated processes to the development team
- Manage and maintain CircleCI pipelines; support developers when they encounter CCI errors or need specific infrastructure changes
Observability and Monitoring
- Define and deploy monitoring, metrics and logging systems on AWS
- Support monitoring configurations in Datadog, including implementing notifications for Terraform builds with Slack
- Improve observability and network error messaging
Database Administration
- Handle version updates for both the MySQL engine and the underlying RDS offering
- Perform performance tuning as needed and write SQL queries to support infrastructure and application diagnostics
- Maintain and manage DynamoDB instances on AWS
Security and Compliance
-
Automate security controls, governance processes and compliance validation on AWS
Vendor and Team Support
- Handle contact with vendors during outages, primarily AWS, CircleCI and Terraform
- Collaborate with the team to troubleshoot production issues, including responding to after-hours escalations if needed
- Informally train and share AWS knowledge within the team
- Debug and examine infrastructure performance issues when escalated
Daily Tasks (Examples)
- Deprecate a tool and remove it from CircleCI repos
- Improve observability: network error messages and alerting
- Implement Datadog notifications for Terraform builds via Slack
- Support developers who are blocked on CCI errors or specific infrastructure requests
- Deploy and validate changes to infrastructure across different accounts and environments
Required Skills
AWS (Must Have)
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS services, with emphasis on: CloudFront, API Gateway, ECS Fargate (containers), Lambda, and Application Load Balancers
- Experience designing and maintaining serverless and container-based architectures
- Experience with AWS Aurora RDS (MySQL) and DynamoDB, including version maintenance and performance tuning
Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD
- Strong Terraform knowledge: able to create new infrastructure, manage modules and deploy changes across accounts and environments independently
- Experience with CircleCI (CI/CD pipelines)
- Experience with Azure DevOps
- Terraform Cloud experience
Containers and Microservices
- Solid Docker experience
- Experience working with microservices in ECS AWS service
- Experience working with microservices in AWS Lambda service
Observability
-
Experience with Datadog monitoring and configuration
Database
- Ability to write SQL queries for diagnostics and performance analysis
- Experience managing MySQL Aurora RDS on AWS: version upgrades, performance tuning and operational support
- Experience managing DynamoDB
Soft Skills
- Independent thinker: able to own and share opinions on new solutions using best practices
- Self-managed: capable of resolving situations under own judgment without constant guidance
- 8+ years of engineering experience working on real-life, consumer-facing products and services
- Excellent team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
Profiles That Will NOT Be Considered
Candidates with only experience in on-premise infrastructure, EC2 migrations, or Kubernetes-only environments will not be a fit for this role. This is a cloud-native, serverless and container-based environment.
