JOB SUMMARY:

The medical director for the UMMG clinics is appointed annually by the UMMG chief executive officer (CEO) in collaboration with the respective department chairman/Chief of Service, CHDS Vice Chairman, and/or division chief. The medical director shall be a member of the active UMMG medical staff, and shall be administratively responsible for achieving the goals established by UMMG/UHealth leadership with regard to the overall quality of the medical care at ­­­­­­­their designated clinical site. The medical director shall work collaboratively with the director/administrator of the practice to develop a partnership that fosters the consistent delivery of high quality patient care.  On an annual basis, the performance of the medical director shall be evaluated in writing by the chief medical officer (CMO) of UMMG, the Chairman of the Departent, and the CHDS Vice Chairman based on the effectiveness of his/her leadership role and the satisfactory execution of duties and recommendation for reappointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (includes but may not be limited to):

  • Communicate objectives, goals, long-term interests of the UMMG and work collaboratively with the departmental administrator, vice chair of administration (VCA) and clinic leadership in all matters of mutual concern.

  • Ensure the highest quality of clinical care through interaction with the other clinicians, nurses and staff if appropriate and necessary. 

  • Collaborate with the practice manager/administrator in:

  • Promoting a positive patient experience including focus on process improvement and efficient patient flow

  • The quality of patient care and research services

  • Expansion of services that align to strategic plan

  • Identifying and resolving conflicts between the medical staff and hospital staff

  • Work and support the director of the Practice to develop an annual budget of the unit and maintain expenses within expectations.  Working in collaboration with the Practice Administrator, VCA, and the CHDS Finance Director, ensures that monthly and annual finance targets pertaining to revenues and expenses are met.

  • Determine appropriate staffing patterns and provide input to determine staffing requirements

  • Develop policies and procedures

  • Evaluate performance of physicians in satellites in collaborations

  • Foster enhanced communication, and connectivity between the clinic and the UMMG and UHealth

  • Assist medical and clinic leadership in the development of an organizational culture that focuses on continuously improving performance, and is conducive to clinical research.

  • Oversee the scheduling of physicians in outpatient clinics and direct efficient and effective assignment of clinical examination rooms.

  • Assist in recruitment efforts as needed to incorporate new faculty into clinic settings and develop mechanisms to effectively onboard new physicians.

  • Encourage participation of clinic faculty in Divisional meetings.  Promote audio visual (AV) teleconferencing / enhanced connectivity as needed.

  • Interpret and ensure medical staff compliance with UMMG/UHealth bylaws, policies & procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable regulatory standards.

  • Collaborate with medical directors of support services where appropriate to ensure integration of services.

  • Promote performance improvement principles and practices by assisting in the design, analysis and monitoring of practitioner performance through data collection.

  • Participate in professional review, performance improvement, utilization review and risk management activities as they relate to the UMMG.

  • Assist in implementation of all relevant federal and state statutes, regulations, and administrative instructions, to meet the accreditation standards of The Joint Commission.

  • Serve as liaison with the medical staff for affairs of the UMMG, including handling physician complaints, risk events, and customer service issues.

  • Represent the clinic in its contact with private and public organizations and institutions.

  • Assist in the development of marketing materials and plans. Identify specific marketing opportunities and needs.

  • Ensures that encounters are closed and in-basket messages are responded on a timely basis.

  • Develops and participates in outreach activities in order to increase patient volumes and raise awareness of the practice.

  • Liaison with the School Board administration for patient matters

  • Perform such other functions and duties as may be assigned or requested by the UMMG leadership.

  • Specific performance metrics relevant to UMMG and/or in accordance with all required mandatory UHealth reporting to state or federal agencies will be outlined in the attached Appendix.
