One part-time position | 20 hours per week | Monday, Wednesday, Friday


Job Duties

The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator serves as a nutrition counselor and health educator. The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator functions as a competent professional authority to facilitate patient-centered goal-setting for nutritional balance and healthy lifestyles for the patients. They adhere to the mandates of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program duties in accordance with USDA Regulations and State and Local Agency Policies and Procedures. The WIC Health and Nutrition Educator determines medical/nutritional risks and prescribes supplemental foods as part of the WIC program.

  • Performs nutrition assessments and determines nutritional risk factors in clients applying for WIC. 

  • Develops care plans and provides appropriate counseling and follow-up on nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, post-partum, and infancy/early childhood. Properly documents all services provided. 

  • Provides nutritional counseling both individually and in groups. 

  • Helps maintain a smooth patient flow through the WIC office. 

  • Promotes breastfeeding by educating WIC clients on the benefits and basics of breastfeeding and pump use. Provides breastfeeding education for staff and organizes breastfeeding support for clients. 

  • Assists in scheduling and enrolling clients in the WIC program and completing duties for certification and food benefit issuance as needed. 

  • Designs informational materials and serves as a nutrition resource for WIC clients, health department staff, and the community. Provides nutrition services to OWCHC and DCHD clients, staff, and community residents. Plans and participates in community health education programs. 

The tasks outlined above are intended to provide a general overview of the role and are not an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, or job functions. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed to support the business, and responsibilities may evolve to meet the changing needs of the organization. 


 

  • Nutritionists (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Home Economics/Consumer & Family Sciences with emphasis in nutrition).

  • Or eligible for Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

  • Or Registered Nurses (RN) with current Nebraska license.

  • Or Physicians/Physician’s Assistants (PA), certified by the State of Nebraska Licensure Board.

  • Or a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 hours of coursework in human nutrition.   

  • Or a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 9 hours of course work in human nutrition and 2 years of work experience related to nutrition education (such as WIC, EFNEP, community health educator)

  • Or Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and completion of a competency-based training program operated by a WIC State Agency and a minimum of 2 years of work experience as a WIC CPA.

  • Or Registered Dietetic Technician – DTR 

  • Or Licensed Practical Nurse with a current Nebraska License

  • One or more years of nutritional counseling/education experience is preferred. 

  • Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products are required. 

  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal) is required and Spanish is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to relate with warmth and empathy to clients, coworkers, healthcare providers, and the public. 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks. 

  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently.
