Role Summary
The Director, Communications - Europe (Executive & Employee Communications) plays a critical role in shaping how Mastercard’s European executives communicate with internal audiences and how Mastercard’s European story comes to life for employees across the region.
Reporting into the SVP, Europe Communications, this role is responsible for developing and delivering high-impact executive communications and employee engagement strategies that align with Mastercard’s global narrative, reinforce business priorities, and strengthen culture, clarity, and connection across Europe’s diverse markets.
In addition, this role supports how European leaders show up externally, including shaping executive voice and visibility through social media, speeches, and selected external platforms, in close partnership with media relations and regional communications leads.
This individual serves as a trusted counsellor to senior executives, translating complex business strategy into clear, compelling communications that motivate, inform, and inspire employees - while ensuring a consistent One Mastercard voice across the region.
Responsibilities
Executive Communications
• Partner closely with European business leaders and functional executives to develop clear, authentic, and effective executive communications aligned to Mastercard’s regional and global priorities.
• Serve as a strategic advisor to executives on messaging, tone, sequencing, and moments that matter - particularly during change, transformation, or periods of heightened attention.
• Ensure executive communications reinforce clarity of strategy, business momentum, and leadership credibility across Europe.
• Lead the creation of speeches, leadership messages, town hall content, talking points, and leadership narratives for internal audiences.
• Lead the development of executive speeches and keynote remarks for priority external moments, including industry events, conferences, and leadership platforms, ensuring alignment with Mastercard’s Europe narrative and global positioning.
• Shape and manage executive social media presence (including LinkedIn and other priority channels), defining voice, themes, cadence, and content that reinforces thought leadership and business credibility.
• Partner with media relations, brand, and issues teams to ensure consistency between internal executive messaging and external executive visibility, while respecting channel‑specific norms and audiences.
• Advise executives on how and when to use external channels to reinforce leadership perspective, business momentum, and cultural leadership—complementing internal engagement rather than duplicating it.
Executive Voice & Leadership Platforms
• Own the editorial approach to executive voice across speeches, social media, and leadership narratives, ensuring a coherent, authentic, and recognisable presence for Europe’s senior leaders.
• Ensure executive content reflects Mastercard’s standards for tone, governance, disclosures, and reputational risk—working closely with Legal, Global Communications, and Issues teams as needed.
Employee Communications & Engagement
• Define and lead Europe’s employee communications strategy, ensuring strong alignment with global frameworks while reflecting regional context, market realities, and cultural nuances.
• Shape employee engagement programs that drive understanding of Europe’s business priorities, progress, and impact.
• Oversee the development of compelling internal content that brings Mastercard’s purpose, values, and strategy to life for employees across Europe.
• Partner with P&C, business leaders, and global communications teams on change communications, leader-led engagement, and company-wide initiatives.
• Champion storytelling that elevates employee voices and reinforces pride, belonging, and connection across the region.
Regional Leadership & Collaboration
• Act as a central connector between global communications, market communications teams, and Europe leadership on employee communications to ensure alignment, consistency, and effectiveness.
• Support regional communications planning, ensuring executive and employee communications are integrated into broader Europe communications strategies and editorial planning.
• Contribute to Europe Communications leadership discussions, helping shape priorities, ways of working, and capability development across the function.
• Role-model Mastercard’s values, culture, and commitment to inclusion.
All About You
Experience
• Extensive experience in communications, with a strong track record in executive communications, employee communications, or internal engagement within a complex, regional or global organization.
• Proven ability to counsel senior leaders and translate business strategy into clear, engaging, and authentic communications.
• Experience operating in a matrixed, international environment, ideally across multiple European markets.
Skills & Attributes
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to move seamlessly between strategic narrative and crisp, practical communications.
• Strong judgment, discretion, and confidence when advising senior leaders on sensitive or high stakes communications.
• Strong experience in speechwriting and long‑form leadership narratives, with the ability to adapt content for live delivery, digital channels, and executive‑authored formats.
• Sound understanding of executive social media dynamics, with good judgement on tone, risk, authenticity, and audience expectations in a European context.
• Strategic yet hands-on: comfortable setting direction while remaining closely involved in execution.
• Highly collaborative, able to influence and align diverse stakeholders across functions and geographies.
• Curious, thoughtful, and driven to continuously raise the bar for clarity, impact, and effectiveness.
