Lawyers Preventing & Ending Homelessness Project 

(Full-Time, Non-Exempt Position) 

  

Inner City Law Center is a nonprofit, poverty-law firm working to end the homeless crisis by providing free legal services to the poorest and most vulnerable residents of Los Angeles. Located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles, our staff of 150 (including 75 lawyers) together with hundreds of volunteers, fight to keep tenants threatened with homelessness in their homes and move those already on the streets into safe and stable housing. ICLC was founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect. Our staff help people facing eviction, struggling with landlord harassment, fighting to secure their veteran or disability benefits, or standing up to slum housing conditions. Position Description: ICLC seeks a talented full-time Administrative Clerk for our Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project. The project is focused on providing clients who are homeless or at risk for homelessness with a broad range of legal assistance that removes barriers to getting and staying housed. A core component of this work is helping clients access critical public benefits that support housing stability and basic survival. This includes assistance with programs such as SSI, SSDI, CalWORKs, CalFresh, General Relief, Medi-Cal, CAPI, and In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), as well as help navigating overpayments, terminations, and denials. 

Responsibilities:  

The Administrative Clerk will provide administrative support to the Preventing and Ending Homelessness team and its growing holistic legal services that stabilize existing housing and remove barriers to housing. They will be the first point of contact for potential PEHP clients and work closely with the Intake Manager to evaluate current systems and processes to increase efficiency and impact. They will ensure the smooth operation of PEHP’s client intake process and placement by streamlining and managing key activities, including: 

  • Coordinates with referring organizations, including emails and phone calls with case workers, housing specialists, and potential clients. 
  • Monitors online intake and referral platforms, reviews incoming referrals for completeness, follow up with clients and referring partners as needed, and ensures timely assignment and processing of referrals.
  • Gathers information and documents from third parties.   
  • Maintains contact with clients for the purpose of confirming program eligibility and scheduling intakes.   
  • Conducts conflict checks. 
  • Opens prescreens in Legal Server and creates client files on SharePoint 
  • Assign weekly intakes to attorneys and paralegals. 
  • Handles client communication, coordination, and follow-up regarding client matters.
  • Provides referrals and connects clients to community resources and services.
  • Provides administrative support to the attorneys and paralegals, including assistance with calls to clients, calendaring, copying, filing, mailing, etc.
  • Schedules intakes, appointments, follow-up meetings, clinics, and outreach events, and coordinates client and witness attendance as needed.
  • Assists with intake, referral tracking, and case assignment workflows, including data entry, file maintenance, and follow-up to ensure timely processing of referrals.
  • Supports trainings, clinics, outreach events, and community partner meetings, including scheduling, coordination, and logistical support.
  • Monitors shared inboxes, voicemail systems, and other intake channels to ensure timely responses and routing of inquiries.
  • Maintains and updates client and referral information in case management and data tracking systems.
  • Coordinates with courts and administrative agencies, including scheduling traffic citation arraignments and conducting case-related follow-up.
  • Obtains signatures via DocuSign or AdobeSign for retainers, releases and other documents. Secure hard-copy files for storage.
  • Sets up hard-copy and electronic client folders. 
  • Contacts third parties for the purpose of document gathering or giving notice.
  • Assists with onboarding and training of new staff as needed.
  • Performs other duties as needed 

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to the mission of the organization (ICLC) and comfortable working with people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. At least two years of relevant experience in a nonprofit setting. Strong ability to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and effectively, both orally and in writing. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English to communicate effectively with clients; assist with Spanish-language and English-language documents and materials, and support program outreach and partner engagement activities as needed. Strong computer and data management skills. Experience with legal case management systems. Demonstrated ability to organize large amounts of data. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.  

Ability to work well with all levels of personnel and support the team’s needs. Self-motivated, willing to learn, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to exercise sound independent judgement. This position will likely require a minimum of four (4) in office days per week but may require up to five (5) days per week as needed.  

Compensation: Hourly compensation ranges from $24.04 - $36.36 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits
