The  DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY has an outstanding opportunity for a STUDENT ASSISTANT. The STUDENT ASSISTANT will work 19.5 hours per week when school is in session, and 40 hours per week during school breaks, for up to one year or until the hourly position limit is reached. The STUDENT ASSISTANT will perform a variety of clerical tasks relating to Anatomic Pathology. This position requires the ability to be meticulous and possess excellent attention to detail.

Under general supervision, perform routine workflows to archive pathology materials for off-site storage and to return outside pathology materials to their originating institution. Sort, track, and file pathology materials in the slide room. As requested, perform mail runs and other routine slide room workflows such as filling requests for pathology materials, tracking materials for incoming or outgoing courier transport. As requested, assist with special projects in the slide room.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Filing glass slides and paraffin blocks
•Preparing slides and blocks for archiving
•Assisting with preparation for future slides intake
•General clerical duties such as copying, mail pickup, distribution and running errands for the Pathology materials room and Administrative personnel
•Storing and archiving pathology materials
•Filling requests for materials internally and from external providers and facilities
•Communicating about material retention, storage, and release protocols with department members and other departments/facilities

1. Archive glass slides and paraffin blocks for off-site storage per retention policy. Track electronically, package securely, and coordinate with archive facility as needed. (15%)

2. Process return and interfile of archive materials for off-site storage. Track electronically, package securely, and coordinate with archive facility as needed. (10%)

3. Process return of outside pathology materials to their originating institution. Track electronically, package securely, and document shipping/tracking information in the case. (25%)

4. Sort, electronically track, and file pathology materials returned to file in the slide room. (20%)

5. Transport incoming and outgoing departmental mail between Pathology office and HMC mail room. (10%)

6. Use Pathology software applications for sending, retrieving, and tracking Pathology and outside institution slides and blocks. Use Pathology software applications for investigating, locating, and documenting materials and inquiries/requests. (5%)

7. Deliver materials to residents, faculty, and other areas of the department as scheduled or as needed. Prepare Pathology material for transport via established courier runs. (5%)

8. Maintain effective communication with the manager and team regarding schedule changes. (5%)

9. Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned. (5%)



EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY:

In accordance with UW Employment and Administrative Policies, Chapter 104, Student Employees, to hold an appointment in one of the covered student job titles a student must be enrolled at the University of Washington and meet the following minimum enrollment requirements (not including correspondence credits):

•Undergraduate students - 6 credits
•Graduate and professional students - 4 credits
•Ph.D. candidates working on dissertations - 2 credits
•Granted "on leave" status
