Job Description

WHO YOU ARE:

QTS Data Centers is seeking a Data Owner to work from our Overland Park, KS office location. QTS’ Data Owner is accountable for data governance, data quality, and data lifecycle standards within an assigned business domain. This role sits within the business unit, aligned with Development Capital Accounting, and serves as the single point of accountability for ensuring that domain data is clearly defined, properly secured, high quality, and aligned to enterprise data governance standards and policies.

The Data Owner establishes the domain-level data strategy, sets annual priorities and measurable goals, assigns and develops Data Stewards, and makes final decisions on critical governance matters impacting the business. The Data Owner partners closely with Technology, Security, Legal, and Enterprise Data teams to ensure that domain data is managed as a strategic asset that supports operational excellence, analytics, and long-term growth.

While not responsible for day-to-day data operations, report development, or technical implementation, the Data Owner remains accountable for governance outcomes and alignment to business objectives.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Establish and maintain the domain data strategy, annual priorities, and measurable goals/objectives aligned to business outcomes (e.g., completeness, accuracy, classification, regulatory compliance).

  • Define, approve, and govern authoritative data elements and definitions and domain standards.

  • Ensure alignment with enterprise data governance standards, policies, and frameworks.

  • Serve as the accountable decision-maker for domain governance topics, including prioritization, security classification, retention requirements/periods, and remediation direction/plans.

  • Provide final approval on critical governance decisions impacting domain data; escalate unresolved risks or cross-domain conflicts through enterprise governance channels as needed.

  • Govern and approve the end-to-end data lifecycle for the domain (creation, classification, retention, archival, and approved disposal) in alignment with governance and records-management requirements.

  • Establish domain-level data quality standards and performance metrics and prioritize/sponsor remediation for critical data quality issues.

  • Monitor remediation progress and ensure execution of agreed-upon corrective actions.

  • Assess and document domain risks: when mitigation is not feasible, assess and accept residual risk with documented rationale and compensating controls (as required), and escalate appropriately.

  • Assign, coach, and evaluate Data Stewards within the domain to ensure effective governance coverage.

  • Ensure domain data complies with regulatory, contractual, and internal policy requirements.

  • Partner with Technology teams to ensure appropriate controls are implemented within data platforms.

  • Collaborate with Enterprise Data, Analytics, Integrations, and Platform teams to enable trusted reporting and analytics.

  • Advocate for data improvements that increase automation, scalability, and operational performance within the business unit.

  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Data Management, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.

  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in a business, data, analytics, or operational leadership role.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience participating in or leading data governance, data quality, or master data initiatives.

  • Experience making business-impacting decisions related to data standards, definitions, or compliance.

  • Experience working cross-functionally with Technology, Security, and business stakeholders.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience serving as a Data Owner, Domain Lead, or similar accountable data governance role.

  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK principles).

  • Experience working with enterprise data platforms, data catalogs, or metadata management tools.

  • Experience in regulated environments or industries with strong compliance requirements.

  • Experience working in a data center, infrastructure, or technology-driven organization.
