Sylvamo’s Eastover, SC paper mill has an opening for a Safety and Health Manager. The position reports to the mill EHS Manager. The Eastover mill is located 30 minutes from Columbia and produces approximately 2,300 tons per day of bleached pulp and paper, employs approximately 650 team members and 90+ continuous presence contractors, and operates 24/7 with high performance work systems. Safety and Health Manager
The Safety and Health Manager provides leadership, coordination and technical expertise in the area of safety and health. This position will have accountability for establishing reliable methods for improving safety performance; nourishing a culture in which safety is an overriding value in all activities and in which every team member and contractor assumes accountability for safety; and assuring compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate performance standards.
Responsibilities include:
• Engage employees and contractors in all aspects of safety and identifying, scoping, selling/influencing and implementing process improvement.
• Ensure all Eastover team members, contractors, vendors and other visitors have a safe environment that meets or exceeds regulatory and company safety compliance standards.
• Engage all mill employees in the safety process and empowering them to take personal ownership for safety results.
• Serve as an expert resource for the Mill Safety Lead Team, Eastover Lead Team and Department Safety Improvement Teams.
• Provide leadership and management support to the Risk Management Coordinator, Mill Nurse, and EHS Technicians (EMTs) on site.
• Ensure that Eastover’s Emergency Response Brigade is properly certified, trained, equipped and ready to respond when needed.
• Mentor Safety Coaches, Safety Coordinators, Safety Specialists and managers in all aspects of safety and safety leadership.
• Support established teams to more effectively accomplish their mission (department safety committees, audit team, PSM team, etc.).
• Develop or improve policies, procedures, programs, training and tools to maintain a safe and healthy work environment in accordance with Sylvamo Performance Standards.
• Manage occupational health, injury case management, workers compensation, and medical surveillance.
• Participate in safety incident investigations to ensure root causes are identified and corrective actions are developed to address incident root causes.
• Maintain required information (PIA, OSHA 300 log, lagging and leading indicators, etc.) and analyze data to provide information to management to identify problem areas and safety trends and develop action plans to address findings.
• Manage contracted security including staffing, gate control and physical plant.
• Manage risk management and loss prevention.
• Manage industrial hygiene.
• Manage corporate Safety and Health interfaces.
• Oversight of contractor safety program.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in a safety, technical, engineering, or related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience. Minimum 10 years of progressive safety and health experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Experience leading and managing safety and health programs in a manufacturing or industrial facility.
• Proficient in the functional/technical skills needed to ensure compliance with applicable safety and health regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to get results through constructively influencing others and successfully interacting with a wide variety of people.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines.
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written) must be an effective listener.
• Experience leading safety, emergency response, contractor safety, regulatory compliance, and training programs.
• Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
Preferred Qualifications:
• CSP and/or CIH certifications.
• OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer (General Industry) certification.
• Current EMT-Basic certification or higher or demonstrated experience supporting occupational health and emergency response programs.
• Firefighter II certification, industrial emergency response brigade experience, or equivalent training and experience in firefighting, rescue, emergency preparedness, and incident command systems.
• Experience as a paper manufacturing facility leader for Safety and Health.
• Experience with certification, training, and other needs for an effective Emergency Response Team.
• Experience using process improvement methodologies and/or change management processes.
• Proven leadership and managerial experience with the ability to manage change.
• Demonstrated ability to build teams and work in a team environment.
