ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Transportation Superintendent position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility Electric Shop supervises field crews performing maintenance & operations work in a large public work department. This position oversees maintenance crews tasked with streetlight, traffic signal, and traffic signal electronics maintenance, repairs, and replacement within the Street Maintenance Division, 811 (Blue Stake) section, and is responsible for field location of COT electrical facilities for all excavations across the City. This position also oversees supplemental contractor support as necessary to fulfill maintenance duties including electrical contractors, electrical inspectors, and utility locators. 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Transportation Administrator. This position exercises supervision over Electric Shop personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises Electric Shop personnel through subordinate supervisors, establishing clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards.
  • Directs maintenance and operations programs for traffic signals and street lighting systems, including management of 24/7/365 on-call response services.
  • Manages personnel functions including recruitment, performance evaluations, employee development, timekeeping, counseling, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and applicable codes while promoting a strong safety culture through training and oversight.
  • Develops, administers, and monitors section budgets, resources, equipment, vehicles, facilities, materials, and staffing needs. Develops reports for management or other administrative areas
  • Manages workflows and assets in an asset management system. Oversees operational reporting, asset management quality control, incident documentation, standard operating procedures, and responses to public records and legal requests.
  • Coordinates with Traffic Engineering, contractors, external agencies, and community stakeholders to support traffic signal operations, maintenance activities, and special projects. Reviews traffic signal and street lighting designs for maintenance impacts.
  • Responds to and resolves public concerns and fosters continuous improvement through staff training and professional development.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is conducted both in the office and in the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associates Degree
Experience: Five (5) years directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
License/Certifications: A valid and unrestricted Driver License

Preferred Qualifications:
Certified Public Manager
Experience managing traffic signal systems, street lighting networks, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), or municipal electrical infrastructure.
Five years of progressively responsible supervisory or management experience in electrical systems, traffic signal operations, street lighting maintenance, transportation infrastructure, or public works operations.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
Experience overseeing utility locating programs (811/Blue Stake) and underground utility coordination
