Our Development Services Department is looking for a Electrical Inspector to join our team. You'll be responsible for inspecting residential and commercial projects for the applicable construction codes while providing exceptional customer service to building owners, occupants, contractors, and the general public. If you have electrical inspection experience and an EL-01 level electrical license or greater, we encourage you to apply! Candidates meeting the requirements for additional experience and certifications may be eligible to be placed in a higher job classification and salary range.

An Electrical Inspector position works under the general supervision of a Review & Inspection Supervisor. Positions in this class perform with a moderate degree of independence to conduct technical inspection work for new and remodeled buildings. The purpose of the work is to inspect field construction to evaluate conformance of electrical systems and related facets of compliant construction in accordance with the approved plans, applicable national, state, and City of Bellevue construction codes and policies & procedures.
 

Minimum Qualifications Required For All Applicants

Current Journey-level Electrician certificate (EL01) issued by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and four years of experience as a journeyman electrician, after obtaining an EL01; 
 
 OR 
Four year’s experience as a journey level electrician performing the duties of an electrical inspector employed by the department or a city or town with an approved inspection program under RCW 19.28.141;

OR
 Other experience and qualifications specified under RCW 19.28.321.

  • Performs technical electrical inspections for residential and commercial projects to verify compliance with the Washington Cities Electrical Code and respective requirements adopted under the Bellevue Construction Code; including National Electrical Code, International Building, Residential, and Mechanical Codes, Uniform Plumbing Code, Washington State Energy Code, Washington State Regulations for Barrier Free Facilities.
  • Ability to read and comprehend residential and commercial plans for conformance with applicable codes while providing a high level of customer service in working with designers, contractors, developers, homeowners, and members of the public. 
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills through the effect use of oral and written communication skills. 
  • Relays technical information and direction to owners, applicants, contractors, and staff in a manner understandable to each by being able to tailor oral communication to the audience. 
  • Responds to inquiries from external and internal customers regarding construction compliance with electrical codes and the City's permit processing procedures. 
  • Effectively utilizes technology including computers, mobile devices, and related software in daily inspection procedures and communication with customers and staff. Responsible for data input of technical information associated with project inspections. 
  • Implements enforcement procedures to correct violations under the direction of the Review & Inspection Supervisor, Inspection Services Manager, or Building Official, depending on the violation. 
  • Is an effective team player and utilizes a collaborative decision-making style to resolve issues or conflicts in a timely manner. 
  • Involved in frequent interactions with developers, architects, engineers and contractors regarding code compliance for proposed projects and projects currently under construction. Uses a constructive problem-solving approach to resolve conflicts. 
  • Works with a number of City departments and other inspection staff to coordinate Certificate of Occupancy and/or TCO processes, identify issues, and resolve conflicts to assure a timely and clear city decision. 
  • Actively participates in the development, refinement and management of inspection, review and code implementation procedures and associated resources and documentation. 
  • Prepares written work products, such as correction notices or other correspondence to property owners, contractors, and other customers to outline necessary corrections required for code compliance on projects under construction. 
  • Regularly attends training to improve technical, interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Attends preapplication, preconstruction, and CO/TCO conferences. 
  • Mediates conflicts, elicits cooperation from others, offers persuasive arguments in support of the City's position. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, public and private officials, builders, designers, and the general public. 
  • Analyzes complex issues and makes timely decisions under pressure. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.

Anyone with the following experience is encouraged to apply:

Primary Experience:

  • Possession of the Journeyman Electrician Certificate (EL01) issued by Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and four years of experience as a journeyman electrician, after obtaining an EL01 
  • Must be able to analyze information, develop logical conclusions, and make recommendations within the framework of established policies and procedures. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills. 
  • Must be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with contractors, homeowners, coworkers, and management staff. 
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple work tasks. 
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet established deadlines. 
  • Must be able to deal effectively with sensitive projects and work with others in a team environment. 
  • Must be able to respond diplomatically to angry clients. 
  • Safe driving record and valid Washington State driver's license required; routine driving of a city assigned vehicle is an essential function of the job.

Secondary Experience:

  • Four years’ electrical engineering or design experience
  • Construction superintendent or foreman experience. 
  • Combination building, mechanical, plumbing inspection experience.
  • ICC certifications or equivalent for inspection or plan review.
