Substantive Paralegal
Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. (Legal Services), a top-rated non-profit law firm serving the South Florida poverty community, is seeking a highly motivated substantive paralegal for its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). The LITC educates low income and ESL persons on their tax rights and responsibilities and represents individuals who have controversies with the IRS.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in interviewing clients and have a familiarity with poverty legal issues and will gain experience in tax matters such as IRS collections and examinations. Starting salary is $39 K but compensation is commensurate with experience.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Senior Attorney, the Paralegal will perform the primary essential functions and responsibilities listed below.
- Interview clients to identify facts, client goals and legal problems.
- Provide legal advice, information, and referrals under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
- Assist in the preparation of legal documents and basic financial documents
- Conduct off-site client intake and outreach.
- Input notes into the case management database.
- Manage administrative tasks such as obtaining intake documents, ID, etc.
Qualifications
- Commitment to promoting the mission, vision, and values of Legal Services.
- Ability to accurately interview applicants and provide advice as per the attorney.
- Ability to effectively communicate with clients, treat them with respect, and maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in weekly case review.
- Effectively utilize the case management system.
- Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and take accurate messages.
- Ability to willingly accept and carry out directions from supervisor.
- Exhibit a spirit of teamwork and cooperation in completing job responsibilities.
- Have a work record which reflects dependability, including availability on a prompt and regular basis.
- Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) software. Knowledge or capacity to quickly learn use of Legal Server case management system.
- Basic math and financial literacy or a strong willingness to learn.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
- Professional demeanor and excellent communication skills paired with a service-oriented attitude.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Creole is preferred.
Salary/ Benefits
$39 K commensurate with experience. Excellent fringe benefits, including 401(k) retirement plan, as well as life, health, and disability insurance.
