Job Description

POSITION:           Paraprofessional for the Visually Impaired

LOCATION:         Districtwide - Services will be provided at multiple school locations based on student need
START DATE:      2026-2027 School Year
SALARY:              Paraprofessional salary(Class 1) based on experience and degree. Salary schedule can be found on the district website:

Qualifications:

  • In order to meet the paraprofessional job qualifications, you must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Associate Degree or higher
    • Completion of 60 college credit hours with a ‘C' or better
    • Passing test score on the ParaPro or Pathways Assessment & official high school transcript or GED equivalency
  • Must be able to demonstrate Braille literacy
  • Braille Certification Course, preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience working with visually-impaired children; preferred
  • Working knowledge of behavior management procedures; preferred
  • Knowledge of accommodations for special education students; preferred
  • Clean Criminal Background, Child Protective Registry Check, and TB test results required prior to employment

 
Responsibilities:

  • Utilize knowledge of the social, emotional, medical, and academic needs of individual students obtained through collaboration with teacher and/or specialist
  • Collaborate with the teacher, paraprofessionals and/or related services providers about the plans and implementation of activities and resources for the students
  • Collaborate with school staff, other agencies and families to provide integrated support and services that meet the child's visual needs.
  • Enlarge print materials for students with low vision.
  • Produce Braille materials for students who read braille
  • Prepare tactile graphics, braille materials, or audio recordings as needed.
  • Encourage student independence: The goal is always to build the student's skills, confidence, and self-reliance
  • Assist in guiding practice, reviewing lessons, and supporting new routines or activities until they are mastered
  • Understand and implement the student's IEP (Individual Education Program) goals and objectives, as well as any accommodations to ensure the student's success
  • Work with students in variety of ways, which may include an individual, small group, or whole group settings
  • Assist in ongoing monitoring of student progress which may include assessments, data collection and computer work
  • Support in maintaining student discipline using behavior management plan as directed by classroom teacher
  • Perform other duties as requested by administration to meet the needs of the students
