Software Engineer & Data Scientist
Job Description
Join the Exploration, Environment and Earth Intelligence Division at Leidos, where you’ll play a pivotal role supporting the U.S. Naval Oceanography Program at the John C. Stennis Space Center. This unique opportunity blends software engineering and data science, allowing you to develop and sustain mission-critical systems and extract actionable insights from complex scientific and geospatial data—directly impacting Navy and allied operations.
As a member of our embedded team at the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), you’ll collaborate with technical experts, work with high-resolution databases, and help solve real-world challenges in undersea warfare, oceanography, and meteorology. You’ll have the chance to design, build, and analyze advanced software and data solutions in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop, maintain, and enhance operational software systems, from requirements gathering through deployment, using best practices in a hybrid agile environment.
- Design and implement methods to consolidate, analyze, and visualize large, complex, and diverse datasets from multiple sources.
- Apply advanced statistical concepts, algorithms, and automated processes to solve practical Naval Oceanography challenges.
- Collaborate with physical scientists, software engineers and data scientists on configuration management, data analysis, cyber reviews, and operational testing.
- Contribute to scientific data processing, geospatial mapping, and the development of tools, dashboards, and queries to monitor and improve operational performance.
- Communicate progress, insights, and potential risks effectively within the team.
- Ensure all activities meet technical, schedule, and cost goals, and comply with Navy security and information assurance requirements.
What You Bring:
- U.S. citizenship and an active Secret (or above) security clearance (or ability to obtain one quickly).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; relevant experience or certifications may substitute for degree.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, and Python (including libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy).
- Experience with database technologies (e.g. SQL, NoSQL) and data manipulation in Windows and Linux environments.
- Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS products and geospatial workflows.
- Ability to execute, troubleshoot, and modify scripts (Python, shell).
- Strong foundation in statistics, data analysis, and scientific data processing.
- Understanding of AI/ML techniques, cloud-based methods, and modern software development frameworks (e.g., MVVM, WPF, .NET MAUI).
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with NAVOCEANO production data, processes, and products (e.g., Oceanographic and Atmospheric Model Library, Navy Digital Bathymetric Database).
- Knowledge of classified and unclassified Navy computing environments.
If you’re passionate about building innovative software and uncovering insights from complex data—and want to make a real impact on national security and scientific discovery—we encourage you to apply!
