Job Description

Fabricate and install tin and sheet metal as part of facility maintenance and installation projects. Tasks are diverse in nature and require use of individual analysis and judgment. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies procedures and regulations. 

 

Essential Functions

  1. Develop sketches and use shop calculations, as necessary, to design, fabricate, lay out in advance and install sheet metal. Perform preventive and emergency maintenance of sheet metal systems or components; prioritize tasks to allow for problems or emergency situations; refer problems that cannot be solved to immediate supervisor.  
  2. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, working drawings and specifications; identify required materials according to strength, durability and suitability for the particular job and prepare accurate material requisitions.
  3. Size and select ductwork and fittings based on cubic feet per minute (CFM), velocity and static pressure requirements.   
  4. Use machine and hand tools to cut and form metal materials to required dimensions; solder, roll, and rivet seams; reinforce parts, if necessary.
  5. Perform maintenance work and fabrication of equipment such as ducts, air cooler parts and framework, rain gutters and downspouts, roof flashing and fascia, furniture and other metal items; inspect completed work of other employees and contractors for conformance with specifications and building codes.  
  6. Work in coordination with other trades responsible for start-up and shut down of coolers, roofing projects or other maintenance functions that use or rely on fabricated metal components for their successful operation or completion.
  7. Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties and supervise the maintenance of the metal working shop as a clean and safe working environment.  
  8. Be responsible for vehicle, vehicle inventory, materials, tools and record keeping necessary to satisfactorily complete an assigned task; schedule required maintenance and inspections and keep vehicle and work areas clean and orderly.  
  9. Supervise and delegate tasks to craft helper as assigned; cooperate with coworkers and routinely report necessary information to immediate supervisor.   
  10. Follow established safety practices in accordance with district policies.
  11. Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

  1. Make routine decisions under general supervision in accordance with established priorities and policies.
  2. Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.  
  3. Follow established safety procedures to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
  4. Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.  

 

Qualifications

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); Three (3) years of experience in fabrication tin and sheet metal; related technical training preferred. Texas/New Mexico driver's license; must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier. Subject to district drug and alcohol testing policy and regulation. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district-wide travel. Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently; work under all weather conditions; exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, and loud noises; be adaptable to work a shift schedule and/or hours other than regularly assigned; extended periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping, heavy lifting and carrying. Work outside and around/on ladders, scaffolding, moving objects, or vehicles. Possible exposure to insects; ability to work with pesticides and herbicides or other potentially hazardous materials in a safe manner. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, around gas lines and fumes, and toxic chemicals, inside and outside.
