Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The School Nurse contributes to the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students by facilitating
positive student responses to normal development; promoting health and safety; intervening with actual and potential
health problems; providing case management services; and actively collaborating with others to build student and family
capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Emergency Services:
• Provides first aid for injuries and acute illness.
• Initiates prompt referral to the appropriate medical facility when more extensive treatment is warranted.
• Administers properly prescribed emergency medication (e.g., Benadryl, epinephrine, glucagon, or insulin).
Health Program:
• Monitors student immunization compliance, notifies parents of discrepancies, and coordinates with
the Principal any actions necessary to comply with state and city mandated immunization policies.
• Assists teachers in presenting health lessons as requested by principal or teacher.
• Provides health counseling for individual students and assists in preparation and deliverance of health and hygiene programs.
• Consults with parents or guardian and/or physician regarding a student’s health.
• Coordinates with public health officials in reporting communicable diseases.
• Reports and follows-up suspected child abuse and neglect to social services authorities.
• Administers prescription and non-prescription medication in accordance with SED requirements
and Birch policy and procedures.
• Assists students, parents, and teachers in adapting to various chronic health problems, i.e. diabetes, dialysis, cancer, etc
• Participates in establishing or revising school and agency policies. Alerts school administrators to health trends and problems.
- Comply with regulatory requirements and school policy and procedures in all areas, and maintain appropriate learning environments, including clean and organized work and common areas.
- Maintain appropriate and effective interpersonal relationships with team and department members, parents, other staff, supervisors, administrators, and outside agencies. Demonstrate:

• The ability to self-evaluate, to utilize supervision and problem solve
• The ability to both offer and accept assistance to/from others

Education BA in Nursing, Licensure as a Registered Nurse in NYS, meeting all education, testing and experiential requirements identified by the NYS Office of the Professions RN with 1-2 years related experience. |
