POSTION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Finance, or the Chief Financial Officer or their designee, The Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for developing and executing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and analysis activities in support of the mission, values, and goals of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Director is also responsible for managing the organization’s cash flow and liquidity. They develop strategies to optimize cash resources, ensure efficient payment processing, and manage short-term investments. The Director leads a staff of three professionals and coordinates with department heads and accounting staff in the various entities to create consolidated budget reports for senior leadership. This position is also responsible for financial accounting and reporting related to Archdiocesan High Schools.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of FP&A is engaged in the ministry of the archdiocese. Accordingly, the Director shall act in a manner consistent with the official teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic Church, as set forth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the policies of the archdiocese as set forth in the online Administrative Handbook.
Strategic Planning
- Partners with senior leadership to align fiscal and budget strategies with the mission, values, and goals of the archdiocese.
- Develops and manages short-range and long-range financial plans, including scenario modeling and forecasting frameworks.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Leads the annual budget process. Partners with department heads to understand their resource needs, help them design annual budgets, and provide them with periodic budget-to-actual reporting.
- Coordinates the annual budgeting process for archdiocesan parishes and schools.
- Leads the annual report process for archdiocesan parishes and schools and consolidation of related financial activity.
- Develops financial forecasts, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Assists the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Finance with the preparation and timely delivery of required bank loan forecasts, collateral reports, and related covenants.
- Supervises one financial analyst.
Financial Analysis and Reporting
- Develops and monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) specific to the respective archdiocesan entities.
- Conducts research and analysis of financial trends including review of reports and metrics from the budgeting software system.
- Assists the Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer in the design, preparation, and presentation of key budget and status reports to senior leadership and the Finance Council on a periodic basis.
Cash and Liquidity Management
- Tracks current cash levels and ensures sufficient funds are available to meet obligations.
- Establishes guidelines for cash handling, payments, and related controls.
- Predicts future cash needs to support business operations and planning.
- Oversees bank accounts, services, and fees, and negotiating favorable terms.
- Ensures timely and accurate processing of payments via various methods (wire transfers, ACH, etc.).
- Optimizes the use of available cash by investing in appropriate short-term instruments.
- Compares actual cash flow to forecasts and investigates discrepancies.
- Collaborates with accounting, finance, and other departments on cash-related matters.
- Implements measures to protect against fraud, errors, and other potential issues.
- Communicates cash flow information to management and other stakeholders.
- Collaborates with Department of Catholic Schools leadership to establish policies and monitor schools that receive direct financial support from the archdiocese (e.g., payroll advances).
- Supervises one cashier.
Archdiocesan High Schools
- Ensures Archdiocesan high schools are compliant with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), non-profit accounting standards, and relevant regulations.
- Supervises one staff member that serves as the business manager for select archdiocesan high schools.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, and innovative technologies in FP&A and cash and liquidity management.
- Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
- Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
- Creates and updates departmental standard operating procedures.
- Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
- Maintains confidential information with discretion.
- Other duties as assigned.
