PRINCIPAL, SECONDARY PILOT SCHOOL

 

The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding high school principal to lead Nava College Preparatory Academy toward continued academic growth and success.  Nava College Prep is a small, college-focused high school (approx. 586 students) co-located on the historic Jefferson campus in South Los Angeles. The school serves a diverse student population, with 95.9% Hispanic/Latino students, 15.5% English Learners, and 99.1% economically disadvantaged, and remains deeply committed to equity and access.

 

The staff holds a strong belief that students are at the center of the work, delivering a rigorous, standards-based program that prepares all students for college and career. Students benefit from a personalized environment with access to the arts, humanities, and innovative technologies.

 

Nava data reflects positive trends in student outcomes, specifically high A–G completion and an approximate 75% CSU/UC application rate.  These results are supported by comprehensive counseling services, targeted credit recovery opportunities, and family engagement systems that ensure students receive the academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary supports needed to remain on track for graduation and college/career readiness. Through ongoing progress monitoring, individualized intervention, and school-wide commitment to student success, Nava continues to create pathways for students to achieve their educational goals.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

will be a student-centered, instructionally focused, and equity-driven leader who believes deeply in the potential of all students and is committed to preparing them for success in college and career. The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and leadership to serve a diverse high school community, including English Learners and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring access to rigorous, grade-level instruction for all. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Lead high-quality instruction by ensuring consistent implementation of standards-aligned curriculum, including StudySync in ELA and Illustrative Mathematics, while strengthening student discourse, language development, and cognitive demand through frequent classroom observations, actionable feedback, and structured coaching cycles.
  2. Use data to improve student outcomes by analyzing multiple measures (e.g., i-Ready, CAASPP, ELPAC, IABs/ICAs), identifying trends, and leading teams to adjust instruction through structured collaboration and targeted interventions.
  3. Strengthen collaborative leadership by building strong Instructional Leadership Team and department structures, including data-driven release days and professional learning cycles focused on student work and outcomes.
  4. Advance English Learner achievement by implementing effective differentiation strategies, including structured talk, language routines, and frameworks such as the Elegance of 12 to increase student access and engagement.
  5. Promote a college-going culture by maintaining strong A–G completion systems, expanding college access, and ensuring students translate readiness into postsecondary enrollment opportunities.
  6. Manage school systems effectively by aligning staffing, resources, and instructional priorities, while maintaining a focus on accountability, coherence, and continuous improvement.

SALARY:

MST 45G - E Basis ($141,159 - $176,037) – 234 paid days

  • For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to budget limitations.
  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):

  • Eight years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a secondary school

 

And one of the following:

  • A minimum of one year of service in an administrative or supervisory position utilizing an administrative credential.
  • Three years of verifiable full-time experience in a school-based leadership non-classroom assignment, such as coordinator, instructional coach, or dean. A portion of this time may include the following:
  • Experience as a lead teacher and successful completion of an aspiring principals program sponsored by the Human Resources Division
    • Experience as a member of a Pilot School Design team and successful completion of an aspiring principals program sponsored by the Human Resources Division

Employees who have been issued a below standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching.
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential                      • Multicultural coursework*
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university    • District Master Plan requirements*

 

*Candidates have one year to complete this requirement

 

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.

    • Leadership in developing a shared vision that strengthens academic achievement, school culture, parent engagement, and student wellness
