
Adaptive Physical Education Teacher
Job Description
Position Summary
Danbury Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher to provide specialized physical education instruction to students with disabilities, ages 3-22, in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The successful candidate will develop and implement individualized instructional programs that promote physical fitness, motor skill development, wellness, and lifelong participation in physical activity. This position requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, data-driven decision-making, and a commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide adaptive physical education instruction to students with disabilities from preschool through transition age programs (ages 3-22).
- Develop and implement individualized physical education programs based on student needs, assessment results, and IEP goals and objectives.
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons utilizing a variety of instructional strategies and adaptations to meet diverse learning and physical needs.
- Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student success and participation.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records, data collection systems, and documentation related to IEP goals and objectives.
- Conduct evaluations and assessments to determine initial and continuing eligibility for adaptive physical education services.
- Prepare written reports and communicate student progress to parents, staff, and administrators.
- Participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings and contribute to the development of appropriate educational programming and services.
- Collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families to support student achievement and physical development.
- Implement district curriculum and instructional practices while ensuring compliance with state and federal special education regulations.
- Maintain appropriate behavioral expectations and utilize positive behavior support strategies to maximize student engagement.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and engage in the district's professional evaluation process.
- Attend and actively participate in department meetings, staff meetings, data team meetings, and other district-required activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Supervisors of Special Education.
Physical Requirements
The essential functions of this position may require significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, positioning, and assisting students with varying physical needs.
Qualifications
- Must hold or be eligible for Connecticut certification in Physical Education.
- Preferred experience working with students with disabilities in educational or therapeutic settings.
- Knowledge of adaptive physical education practices, assessment tools, and instructional strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered practices.
