
Laboratory Team Lead
Job Description
Position Summary
The Laboratory Team Lead is responsible for leading Laboratory staff and supporting Laboratory management. This includes managing the staffing schedule and completion of work, resolving problems and assisting staff with questions, as well as responding to customer questions. The Team Lead performs employee on-boarding and training duties, monitors the work of staff and conveys feedback. In addition, the Team Lead is responsible for performing testing, analyzing results, overseeing inventory, and gathering and communicating metrics.
Shift: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm
Pay range: $25.00 - $26.50 based on experience
What You Will Do as a Laboratory Team Lead
Operational Excellence (35%)
- Performs Laboratory testing and analyzes results.
- Updates, reviews, and approves technical documents (e.g., approve log book pages, update or approve process descriptions for testing, procedure change orders).
- Identifies operational issues/problems and conveys to team during daily debriefs, makes recommendations, and implements improvement changes.
- Oversees staff’ completion of inventory and gathers staff’ department metrics to ensure overall deadlines and quality expectations are met.
- Meets with team.
- Creates spreadsheet to track metrics.
- Reports metrics to management.
- Contributes in a team effort by performing in accordance to all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of higher-level management and performs other duties as assigned.
- This position may require the use of equipment and / or power tools, as applicable.
- This position may require the incumbent to obtain their boilers license, as applicable.
People Leadership (50%)
- Manages the staffing schedule, ensuring staff are assigned to tasks to meet testing deadlines, and work effectively and efficiently in the face of potential roadblocks (e.g., equipment down, unexpected staff leaves and absences, part-time off, etc.).
- Schedules and rotates staff to different tasks using Excel Spreadsheet.
- Sends out the next day’s schedule to define expectations for Laboratory Technicians.
- Works with other departments to coordinate testing schedules and staff assignments due to shared resources (e.g., equipment).
- Redistributes work and shifts priorities as needed.
- Resolves problems and shares expertise with staff to ensure staff can meet expectations (e.g., answers questions, interprets data, resolves equipment problems, identifies alternative routes for materials, etc.).
- Onboards, trains, and monitors staff in the performance of safety practices and standard operating procedures, both formally and informally. a. Provides immediate performance feedback when an issue is detected; provides feedback to supervisor.
- Ensures appropriate updates to training records.
- Assists in the corrective action preventative action (CAPA) process.
Customer Reltionships (15%)
- Responds to written and verbal requests (i.e., email, phone calls) for information (e.g., status of tests, preliminary interpretation of results) from internal and external customers.
The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed
- Bachelors degree with 2 years of experience is required.
- Knowledge of common Laboratory equipment, testing techniques, and microbes such as bacteria.
- Skill in organizing, planning, and prioritizing tasks and physical materials for self and others (e.g., schedules, work assignments, Laboratory materials).
- Skill in prioritizing the adherence to safety protocol at all times and monitoring self and environment for potential hazards.
- Skill in assisting and training Laboratory Technicians.
- Skill in managing change.
- Skill in leading meetings with Laboratory Staff.
- Ability to read, comprehend and learn technical information quickly (e.g., manuals, procedures, instructions).
- Ability to communicate technical information to staff and customers.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements or work environment.
- Ability to work well in a team environment, taking the lead for specific duties.

Pay range for this opportunity is $25.00 to $26.50 per hour, depending on experience and skillset. This position is eligible for bonus participation.
Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
