This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program.

The Transportation, Engineering & Operations (TE&O) Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a motivated Data & Operations Intern to support the County’s Vision Zero and transportation safety initiatives. Working under the guidance of experienced professionals, the intern will assist with transportation data collection, field work, safety studies, operational reviews, and public engagement efforts. This internship provides hands-on experience using data, analysis, and field observations to support traffic safety strategies, evaluate safety countermeasures, and contribute to Arlington County’s goal of eliminating serious and fatal roadway crashes.

Major Job Duties: 

  • Supporting Vision Zero and transportation safety initiatives through project-based assignments focused on traffic safety, transportation operations, and field analysis;
  • Assisting with transportation data collection, coordination, organization, and summarization related to field activities and safety studies;
  • Supporting field work and safety assessments, including before-and-after studies, operational reviews, and in-field observations;
  • Assisting with crash data analysis and identification of transportation safety trends under the guidance of engineering and operations staff;
  • Preparing data summaries, visualizations, maps, presentations, and other materials to support safety studies, reports, and public outreach efforts;
  • Supporting asset management activities, tracking systems, and work order coordination related to transportation safety and operations;
  • Assisting with public engagement efforts, including organizing materials and summarizing community feedback related to safety initiatives; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support Vision Zero, Transportation Engineering and Operations (TE&O), and departmental priorities.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and organizational skills and an interest in transportation safety, operations, or public infrastructure. Coursework or experience involving data analysis, field work, transportation systems, engineering, planning, or public sector initiatives is preferred, along with the ability to communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Interns gain hands-on experience supporting key County initiatives while participating in a structured cohort-based development program. Throughout the year, interns work under the mentorship of senior staff, contributing fresh ideas, improving processes, and leveraging technology to enhance organizational effectiveness, all while familiarizing themselves with a public-sector environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Recent, 2025 and/or 2026 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the Cohort Program (Sept. 2026) must have:

  • No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
  • You may be a currently enrolled student in a Master’s degree program related to the internship, but you must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

Degree Requirements: Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, GIS, Data Science, Public Policy, Environmental Planning, or related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; 
  • Coursework or experience related to transportation safety, Vision Zero, traffic operations, or transportation planning;
  • Experience supporting field-based data collection, safety studies, or operational analyses; 
  • Experience with data analysis or visualization, including use of Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI/Tableau, GIS, or similar tools; and/or
  • Ability to prepare clear data summaries, visuals, maps, or reports for technical and non-technical audiences.

 

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

Additional Information

Work hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, with a one-hour unpaid lunch break each day. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.

  • Under the DES flexwork policy, employees must work at least 24 hours in the office each pay period (every two weeks). Specific in-office days and schedules can be arranged with the supervisor, provided they comply with DES flexwork requirements. 
  • Schedules are subject to periodic review and adjustment based on operational priorities, annual demands, and individual performance. 
  • During telework hours, employees are expected to remain responsive and available, maintain regular communication with their team and supervisor, and ensure that all work responsibilities are fulfilled in a timely and professional manner.

The pay range listed above is effective July 1, 2026.
