LOCATION:       Woodbridge Early Childhood Education Center

START DATE:    August 19, 2026

REPORTS TO:     Cafeteria Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The Child Nutrition Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, appealing, and safe meals to students and staff in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position works as part of the Child Nutrition Department and is assigned to a specific school cafeteria. The Cook assists with meal preparation, food production, inventory management, sanitation, and customer service while supporting a positive dining experience for students. 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in food preparation, institutional cooking, school nutrition programs, or commercial food service preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and production records.
  • Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations related to food preparation and inventory.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain required food safety certifications as required by state and local regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and cook breakfast, lunch, and other food items according to approved menus and standardized recipes.
  • Ensure meals are prepared in compliance with USDA, state, and district nutritional guidelines.
  • Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with meal service and ensure food is served in appropriate portions and at proper temperatures.
  • Maintain accurate food production records and documentation as required.
  • Receive, inspect, and properly store food and supplies.
  • Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors of supply needs.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, food preparation areas, serving lines, storage areas, and dining facilities.
  • Assist with inventory counts and stock rotation using first-in, first-out (FIFO) procedures.
  • Support efforts to reduce food waste and maintain cost-effective operations.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Assist with special events, catering functions, and district programs as assigned.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and maintenance needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the position.
  • Attend required training, meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Child Nutrition Supervisor, Cafeteria Manager, or district administration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

The Child Nutrition Cook works primarily in a school cafeteria and a commercial kitchen environment. The position requires adherence to strict food safety, sanitation, and health regulations while maintaining a safe and efficient food service operation. This position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The schedule includes one (1) unpaid 30-minute meal break. Employees work 7.0 paid hours per day for a total of 35.0 paid hours per week during the school year. Additional hours may be required for training, special events, catering functions, or other district needs.

Working conditions include:

  • Exposure to varying temperatures, including hot ovens, stoves, steam tables, dishwashing equipment, refrigerators, freezers, and outdoor delivery areas.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Regular bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying food products, supplies, and equipment.
  • Frequent use of commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, mixers, slicers, steamers, dishwashers, and other food preparation tools.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and sanitizing agents in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and meal service schedules.
  • Frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, vendors, and visitors requiring professional and courteous customer service.
  • Occasional participation in special events, catering activities, training sessions, or meetings outside of normal meal service operations.
  • Requirement to wear district-approved uniforms, personal protective equipment, and other safety attire as required.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure timely meal preparation and service.
