POSITION SUMMARY
To maintain and install all the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic components within CHEO. Sometimes this is through a contractor, but the Refrigeration Technician has main role in the design, coordination, and implementation of this work.
A Refrigeration Technician at CHEO is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining the refrigeration, cooling, combined heating cooling systems, including geo-exchange systems. This equipment is used to store and transport medical supplies, drugs, food, and other critical items. They work closely with other members of the maintenance team to ensure that the systems are operating efficiently and safely, and they may be called upon to troubleshoot and fix any issues that arise. This includes department and capital projects.
Ideal candidate must be available to work scheduled overtime as required.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Plan, lay out, install, start-up, connect, maintain, service, repair, test, verify, commission, and decommission refrigeration and air conditioning systems, electronic components, and their accessories. This includes anything from refrigerators to chiller systems.
- Install and connect piping for the purpose of conveying all types of refrigerants used for both primary and secondary heating and cooling.
- Check efficiency outputs and parameters; inspect and check operation and integrity of components; determine set points; replace defective, leaking, discolored, and worn components; perform shut-downs and lock outs; adjust pressures and controls; clean and lubricate components; check calibrations; reassemble and repair components and systems; start-up, test and charge the systems.
- Measure, cut, bend, thread, and connect pipe to functional components and utilities; service, test, adjust, commission, and decommission the system.
- Assure work area is kept safe and clean.
- Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
- Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Criminal Record Check (Essential)
- Candidate must hold a valid National Journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Red Seal) Essential
- Minimum of 5 years and valid qualifications as a National Journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Red Seal) (Essential)
- Experience in Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities (Preferred)
- Demonstrated extensive knowledge of mechanical, plumbing and HVAC systems. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated mechanically inclined and electronically inclined. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated computer, office, and word processing skills. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to work with power and hand tools. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-skilled environment. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to work on inter-disciplinary project teams. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills. (Preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively. (Preferred)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
