Job Description: Paramedic

Paramedic Job Summary: The Paramedic will lead and provide direct patient care within their scope of practice independently and in support of their partner in the pre-hospital, and inter-facility transfer settings. The employee will participate in the care and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and ambulances. The employee must be able to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks and maintain a high level of patient/customer satisfaction. In the absence of, or direction by the Captain, the Lieutenant will plan, coordinate daily shift assignments, supervise shift personnel, ambulance response, and station activities. Other duties as assigned.

Paramedic Essential Job Accountabilities:

  • Performs skills within the scope of practice of a Paramedic with a compassionate and caring manner to exhibit a professional and calm environment in emergent situations. 

  • Performs ALS skills including advanced airway management, IV/IO insertion, medication administration, 4-Lead and 12-Lead EKG placement and interpretation, defibrillation and pacing, chest decompression. This list is not all inclusive. 

  • Leads, anticipates, and reacts to partner’s needs to maintain a functioning team and ensure excellent patient care. 

  • Works independently, multi-tasks and manages a multi-casualty scene to enforce an organized and proactive workspace.  

  • Maintains a professional image and promotes professional relationships among EMS, healthcare and other public service personnel and encourages communication at all levels to effectively serve and assist the community. 

  • Documents accurately and timely the electronic medical record to prevent lost or false information on patient medical records. 

  • Participates in routine shift duties to assist and support other EMS personnel and other hospital staffing. 

  • Reviews patient care reports to ensure completeness and accuracy. 

Paramedic Skills:

  • Maintains and develops positive and professional relationships with local emergency service providers, hospital staff, physicians, and other community shareholders to display and exhibit the hospital CARE Values. 

  • Displays and applies excellent skills in verbal and written communication. 

  • Demonstrates compassion, high emotional intelligence, and professionalism to inspire, motivate, and provide care to others in stressful situations. 

  • Assess patient needs and qualities of psychomotor skills. 

Paramedic Qualifications:

Education/Licensure/Certifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 

  • Kansas Certified Paramedic  

  • ACLS, PALS, BLS within 3months of hire 

  • NIMS/ISC 100, 200, 700, 800 

  • Valid Driver’s License with minimal violation history, satisfactory motor vehicle record and insurability. 

Experience: 

  • Minimum 1 to 2 years in EMS 

Age-Specific Skills:    

  • Neonate (birth-28 days) 

  • Infant (29 days- less than 1year) 

  • Pediatric (1- 12years) 

  • Adolescent (13- 17years) 

  • Adult (18- 64years) 

  • Geriatric (65 years & older) 

Discretion/Latitude/Decision-Making: Able to make fast and safe decisions in stressful situations. 

Hazardous Working Conditions:  OSHA Category 1 

Environmental Surroundings: 

Potential exposure to airborne diseases.  The same as for any individual working in a hospital environment that is dependent on a ceiling ventilation system for in flow and out flow of air. Located in an environment with regular exposure to fumes or odors, temperature extremes, or loud noises which cause noticeable discomfort or moderate risk of accident or illness. Employees must wear personal protective equipment as needed (PPE). 

Physical Working Conditions: 

Continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking/pushing/climbing and lifting materials or equipment of heavy weight (>50 lbs). Frequently performs activities that require stooping, bending, and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the shift.  

Sitting - 30% of time 

Walking/Standing - 70% of time
