Job Description

Job Overview

Health & Care Jersey is seeking an experienced and visionary Lead Midwife (Head of Midwifery) to provide strategic, professional, and transformational leadership across Jersey Maternity Services.

This is a pivotal senior leadership role with responsibility for shaping the future direction of maternity care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Working closely with the Director of Midwifery & Nursing, senior clinical leaders, and multidisciplinary partners, the post holder will lead service transformation, workforce development, quality improvement, and governance to ensure safe, high quality, and person centred care for women, babies, and families.

The role is focused on system‑level leadership, strategy, and assurance, rather than routine day‑to‑day operational management. The Lead Midwife will lead the evolution of maternity services to meet changing population needs, emerging evidence, and national standards, ensuring services are sustainable, inclusive, and future focused within a unique island healthcare system.

This post offers a rare opportunity to influence maternity services at scale, with visible impact, close professional relationships, and the ability to deliver meaningful change at pace.

The Lead Midwife provides senior professional, strategic, and transformational leadership for maternity services across Health & Care Jersey. The role focuses on setting the vision, direction, and professional standards for midwifery practice, ensuring services are safe, person‑centred, evidence based, and aligned with national standards and Government of Jersey priorities. The post holder acts as the senior professional authority for midwifery and provides assurance to the organisation and Board regarding quality, safety, and outcomes.
