About This Opportunity

Reporting to the Integrated Physiology Facility (IPF) Manager and working within the School of Biomedical Sciences, this role delivers high-quality animal welfare, husbandry, technical support and service delivery across UQ’s Integrated Physiology Facility. You will be part of a collaborative, purpose-driven team supporting world-class biomedical research, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance, biosecurity, and the wellbeing of animals, staff and students.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert daily care to laboratory animals, including standard and complex husbandry, health monitoring, animal identification, breeding support, euthanasia and tissue collection.

  • Maintaining animal holding and laboratory spaces through cleaning, sterilisation processes, and strict biosecurity controls.

  • Supporting research operations through accurate record keeping, database management, inventory control and regulatory documentation.

  • Training and supervising staff, students and researchers in animal procedures, husbandry practices and the use of specialised equipment.

About You

You will bring a strong technical foundation, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to animal welfare and research excellence. You will also demonstrate:

  • Completion of a degree in animal science, or a Diploma or Certificate III qualification in animal technology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training, including experience in a PC2 certified animal containment facility.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining PC2 laboratories, including cleaning, sterilising equipment and managing appropriate waste streams.

  • Working knowledge of animal ethics, biosafety, OH&S and OGTR requirements relevant to research animal facilities.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot issues and achieve positive, compliant outcomes in a research environment.

  • Proficiency in database software and accurate record keeping.

  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with researchers, veterinarians, students and external contractors.
