Job Description
Position Purpose: The Accounting Manager will be responsible for leading key areas of the accounting function, including the monthly close process, financial reporting, account reconciliations, audit support, and the ongoing accuracy and integrity of the general ledger. This role requires a strong technical accounting foundation, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage both processes and people.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who can identify issues, research discrepancies, resolve root causes, and ensure accounts are clean, supportable, and audit-ready. This person will also be responsible for developing accounting staff, improving close efficiency, and strengthening internal controls.
Responsibilities:
Close Process Management
- Manage and support the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
- Ensure close activities are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with company deadlines.
- Review journal entries, accruals, account analyses, and supporting schedules.
- Identify close-related issues and drive timely resolution.
- Partner with accounting leadership to improve close timelines, quality, and consistency.
Financial Reporting & Accuracy
- Support the preparation and review of financial statements and management reporting.
- Ensure financial results are accurate, complete, and properly supported.
- Analyze balance sheet and income statement activity for reasonableness and accuracy.
- Research unusual variances, trends, or inconsistencies and provide clear explanations.
- Help ensure reporting complies with GAAP and company accounting policies.
Account Reconciliations & Balance Sheet Integrity
- Own or oversee the preparation and review of key account reconciliations.
- Ensure reconciliations are completed timely, accurately, and with appropriate support.
- Research and resolve reconciling items, aged balances, and account discrepancies.
- Maintain clean, supportable balance sheet accounts.
- Identify recurring issues and implement process improvements to prevent future discrepancies.
Audit Support & Compliance
- Assist with annual audit preparation and external audit requests.
- Prepare and review audit schedules, account support, and variance explanations.
- Coordinate with auditors to provide timely and accurate responses.
- Support internal control compliance and documentation.
- Help ensure accounting records are audit-ready throughout the year, not just during audit fieldwork.
Staff Development & Team Leadership
- Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Review staff work and provide timely, constructive feedback.
- Train team members on accounting processes, reconciliations, close procedures, and reporting requirements.
- Help build accountability, ownership, and technical strength within the accounting team.
- Identify skill gaps and support the growth of high-performing staff.
Process Improvement & Controls
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and close efficiency.
- Standardize procedures and documentation across recurring accounting tasks.
- Strengthen controls around journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and reporting.
- Assist with system, process, and ERP-related improvements as needed.
- Promote a disciplined accounting environment focused on accuracy, transparency, and accountability.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and core accounting principles.
- Experience managing or heavily supporting the monthly close process.
- Strong balance sheet reconciliation and financial reporting experience.
- Experience researching and resolving accounting discrepancies.
- Prior experience supervising, reviewing, or developing accounting staff.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Desired Competencies:
- CPA or CPA-track preferred.
- Public accounting and/or audit experience preferred.
- Experience in a multi-entity or complex accounting environment.
- Experience with ERP implementations, system transitions, or process redesign.
- Experience improving close processes, reconciliations, and reporting controls.
- Ability and desire to drive change through high-energy, can-do attitude, comfortable working in a high-performance, entrepreneurial, open-door environment
- Must be an outstanding communicator and team player who demonstrates attention to detail, and who also understands how to ensure finance initiatives that support the long-term strategy of the business
