PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES Manage a large animal holding facility that supports a variety of research programs and projects Supervise and train lower-level personnel including coordinating and preparing work schedules Select and train animal care and technical personnel Perform a wide range of administrative functions including procurement, personnel recruitment, space allocation, and budgetary control Independently administer a project or group of projects Review subordinates’ work for accuracy and correct technical procedures Evaluat employee conduct and performance Prepar work schedules to meet project requirements Prepar cost data for renewals and proposals Monitor labor budgets and material and supplies budgets Maintain detailed and accurate record keeping meeting USDA and ACUC regulations Perform complex technical operations or procedures Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours BASIC QUALIFICATIONS To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/ university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with course work related to biomedical research or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible technical or technically related administrative experience and a minimum of four (4) years in a supervisory role Extensive experience working with laboratory animals, and/or performing related technical manipulations required for the maintenance of laboratory animals Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records and utilize Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word Excel) Knowledge of policies and regulations governing care and use of research animals Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and wear personal protective equipment Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: Strong organizational, observational, communication and computer/data entry skills.
