Facilitator in American Sign Language - Full-Time - Interim

EFFECTIVE: AUGUST 1, 2026
 
DESCRIPTION
An educational instructor who is knowledgeable and has experience in American Sign Language to facilitate communication with a student who is deaf in all aspects of the daily instructional program. The Communication Facilitator is a member of the educational team directly involved in the instruction of sign language and re-teaching educational skills. The Classroom Special Education Communication Facilitator will work under the direct or indirect supervision of the classroom teacher and Speech Language Pathologist.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have at a minimum 48 semester hours of college credit, an Associate's Degree or pass the State ETS Paraprofessional Assessment. Preference will be given to candidates who have additional education, bachelor degree or higher education degrees. Additionally candidates must have knowledge and experience demonstrating proficiency in American Sign Language. Candidates must meet health and physical qualifications necessary for the performance of the job responsibilities. Pay is contingent on education level, certifications and experience. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of the education program under the supervision of the classroom teacher and Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Conduct instruction in American Sign Language with the designated student as well as work with a communication device and picture cards to increase the student's fluency in communication with staff and peers.
  • Assist with the implementation of a behavior management system as established by the classroom teacher.
  • Communicate effectively with the student in the student's preferred mode of communication as established by the program.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with the students and staff.
  • Refer all questions from parents or family members about class work or services/supports to the special education teacher.
  • Collaborate and provide support with the special education teacher and Speech Language Pathologist in the acquisition of signs to facilitate instruction.
  • Collect data on student progress and facilitate accommodations/modifications in the instructional program.
  • Participate in general staff meetings, training programs and in-service sessions as required.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the special education teacher or building level administrator. 

 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Follow district calendar of staff and students.
 
PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
Annual evaluation by building based principal or by his/her designee.
