Job Description

Job Title: Teacher � Special Education Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

 

Reports to: Building Principal Pay Grade: Teacher Salary � 187 Days

 

Dept./School: Assigned Campus Date Revised: February 6, 2026

Primary Purpose: 

To help students learn core subject matter and skills at appropriate levels that will contribute to their development as mature, capable, and responsible individuals. To provide students with supplemental learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. To enable students to develop competencies and skills to successfully meet state standards. To provide support to all students, especially those experiencing difficulties mastering content and performance standards through additional research-based instruction.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: 

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree and area of specialization when required for the position.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate or such other credentials as may be required by the State Board for Educator Certification for this position.
  • Valid certification in Special Education

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
  • Effective communication skills 

Experience:

  • One year student teaching or approved internship 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

  1. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  2. Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of all students based on the district's educational philosophy, goals, objectives, and individual student plans.
  3. Based on assessment data, write measurable Individual Educational Program (IEP) goals and objectives for students eligible for special education.
  4. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee Meeting to determine the appropriate program for students eligible for special education.
  5. Follow the student's IEP or Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) as determined by the ARD Committee.
  6. Analyze student data to determine appropriate interventions.
  7. Monitor student progress on IEP goals and objectives by data collection and/or evaluation.
  8. Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  9. Evaluate student performance on a regular basis, through formal and informal testing, and provide progress reports as required, every 9 weeks.
  10. Communicate with parents in order to strengthen parental understanding of the student's needs and the school's role in meeting those needs.
  11. Participate in staff development to maintain professional competence and to ensure compliance with Federal and State guidelines regarding special education services. Share such information with staff as appropriate.
  12. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  13. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of all students.
  14. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation.
  15. Establish and maintain standards of appropriate student behavior.
  16. Employ a variety of instructional strategies and media which meet the needs and capabilities of the students.
  17. Refer students with special needs to the appropriate district specialist and participate on committees related to individual student planning.
  18. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, self, equipment, materials, and facilities in order to provide an on going, safe classroom environment.
  19. Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  20. Assist as directed in the daily operations of the school.
  21. Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when needed.
  22. Plan and supervise duties for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  23. Maintain and improve competence through participation in professional training.
  24. Attend all staff meetings and serve on committees as requested.
  25. Other duties as assigned 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may supervise assigned educational assistants.

Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist nonambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment; may work prolonged or irregular hours 

Environment: 

Exposure to biological hazards 

Mental Demands: 

Maintain emotional control under stress

Other: Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures; Other duties as assigned.
