Job Description

This is a part-time, temporary, Bus Driver position for Caesar Rodney School District activities.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To ensure the safe transportation of students to and from school-related activities, such as athletic events and field trips.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Safely transports students to and from school-sponsored activity trips and events.
  • Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is clean, safe, and in proper working condition.
  • Refuels and cleans the bus as needed.
  • Ensures that a communication device is functioning properly before each trip.
  • Reports all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents, promptly.
  • Maintains order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with district policies and procedures; reports any incidents involving student discipline.
  • Observes and tracks route timing, such as total time en route, time between stops, loading/unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency, as requested.
  • Maintains accurate logs, reports, and other documentation as required.
  • Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes.
  • Conducts inventory of emergency and first-aid supplies; reports deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Prepares students and aides for emergency bus drills and ensures drills are conducted as required.
  • In the event of an accident or emergency, evacuates students according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes incident reports as necessary.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Performs other related tasks as assigned.

EQUIPMENT:
Standard school bus and automotive equipment, including communication devices such as mobile radios or phones.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Travel between district schools and various off-site activity/event locations is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.
  • Physical ability to move within the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the community.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License.
  • Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL)- Class B with Passenger, Air Brakes and School Bus endorsements. 
    • Note: Applicants currently in the process of obtaining a CDL are encouraged to apply.

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required.

SALARY: $25.50 – $30.60 per hour, effective for the 2025–2026 school year.
Final rate determined based on prior experience.

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  • Individuals must provide official transcripts, if applicable, updated resume, and three (3) letters of recommendation.
  • All persons employed by the Caesar Rodney School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following: proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
