Job Description

Position Title: Head Varsity Cheerleading
Department: Athletic Department
Reports to: Principal, Athletic Director
 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under limited supervision, trains and supervises the varsity cheerleading squad. Responsible for instructing student athletes in cheerleading activities and providing leadership in helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. Provides supervision of all members of the cheerleading squad at all times of involvement. Reports to the Principal and/or Athletic Director.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communicates with the student body as to the goals and purposes of the cheerleading squad and encourages team participation.

Conforms to the athletic department procedures and Board of Education policy.

Organizes and conducts tryouts for the squad; communicates the results of the tryouts to appropriate individuals.

Provides supervision of all members of the cheerleading squad during all times of involvement and administers discipline for violation of standards stipulated by Board policy and school procedures.

Assists in providing and promoting the mission/vision of cheerleading squads.

Enforces all rules and regulations of SCHSL, FCHS athletic policies, and Board of Education policies.

Maintains necessary attendance forms, eligibility records, team roster, and similar paperwork and submits information to the athletic director as requested.

Prepares the cheerleaders for games, pep rally sessions, and/or sporting events/cheering activities.

Works closely with the athletic director in scheduling practices as appropriate; conducts practices throughout the year as needed.

Coaches individual participants, small groups, and the team, as appropriate, in the skills necessary for achievement in the sport.

Participates in various public events, camps, and other cheer events to be determined and agreed upon by the Athletic Director and Principal.

Provides input to the athletic director concerning the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the practice or performance is conducted.

Assists the athletic director with purchasing equipment and uniforms needed for the program in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations (if applicable).

Promotes the best interest in the total athletic program as it relates to the best interest of the students and the welfare of the school District.

Assigns duties and responsibilities to assistant coaches (if applicable).

Participates in special activities to include parents' night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.

Organizes cheerleading practices in the summer, fall, and winter.

Manages and supervises the assigned athletic program (if applicable).

Supervises students at all times from the time practice or activity begins until all students leave campus.

Monitors the physical condition of students constantly during physical activity; enforces safety rules and regulations.

Encourages academic excellence of student athletes.

Assesses the accomplishments of student athletes on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.

Maintains positive relationships with parents; schedules and conducts conferences with parents and student athletes as necessary.

Performs related duties as required.

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the district's Athletic Evaluation Instrument.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Meets all qualifications established by the South Carolina High School League. Valid South Carolina Teacher Certificate preferred. Experience in coaching cheerleaders or participating in cheerleading (preferred). Possesses and maintains high moral character. Ability to work well with children. Possesses knowledge of the sport assigned, including, but not limited to, knowledge of training and conditioning techniques. Possesses the ability to communicate with parents and students. Possesses a thorough understanding of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport. Possesses the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students. Must have successful and effective cheerleading coaching experience.
