
Associate / Associate Director - Transport Economist
Job Description
Working with our clients in the public and private sectors, we have supported the successful delivery of billions of pounds of investment. This has encompassed local interventions to address issues of exclusion and poor design, to multi-million-pound innovative solutions to unlock major economic and social opportunities or protect internationally significant heritage.
As trusted advisors collaborating with clients, we deliver compelling business cases and business case related work underpinned by technically robust analysis which consistently withstands scrutiny and challenge through governance gateways. Our experience encompasses an extensive range of projects including for active travel, intelligent transport systems, local highway measures, MaaS, major highway schemes, mass transit, mobility hubs, new stations, rail service improvements, residential & commercial developments, speed management and user charging.
We are seeking to recruit an experienced and talented Associate Transport Economist to join the Business Case Advisory team (part of Mobility Planning). You would be joining a virtual team with colleagues based across India and the UK.
We undertake a wide variety of projects to provide clients and funding bodies with clear and robust information to support informed decision making. The nature of our work typically encompasses:
Making the case for investment in proposed transport and/or land-use schemes by understanding the rationale
Developing objectives in the context of relevant policy and identified problems and opportunities
Developing the evidence to support informed choices by clients and funders
Developing and applying Multi-Criteria Assessment Frameworks to ensure robust optioneering
Creating economic and financial appraisal frameworks consistent with HM Treasury and DfT guidance
Providing analytical and appraisal expertise to colleagues across WSP
Collaborating with colleagues and clients to assemble information and communicate clearly analytical findings
We are looking for candidates who possess the following attributes and can demonstrate:
Expertise in the field of business case production and familiarity with the 5-Case Business Case Model
Technical excellence in analysis, analytical assurance and the development of Value for Money assessments (encompassing economic appraisal of monetised impacts)
Excellent collaboration and communication skills to share your technical knowledge with colleagues, to convince Government Departments of the quality of our work and the value of the schemes we promote, and to articulate our offering to our clients
Strong project management skills able to coordinate multiple workstreams that inform a complex business case and ensure projects are delivered on time, to budget and programme
Commercial awareness to assist in the operational running of the BCA team
A track record of successfully supporting the career development of junior colleagues and acting as a role model
Growth mindset to identify and implement strategies to increase our headcount and revenue associated with business case related services delivered by GCC
Experience of applying innovation / AI to support consistently high quality analysis and deliverables
Effective team working with confidence to take on responsibility and ownership of activities, as well as being comfortable to seek guidance and advice when required.
