Job Description

Job Title: School Security Officer 
Salary Range: $33,192-$58,945
Supervisor: Lead Security Officer
Job Classification: Non-Exempt
Contract Length: 10-months (186 days)

Job Summary
School Security Officers work collaboratively with their immediate supervisor, Director, and school-based leadership to cultivate and maintain a safe learning environment. Additionally, School Security Officers may serve as mentors to students who need extra social and emotional support, and engage parents and families as partners in alignment with the Division's priorities. 
Essential Job Functions 

  • Works proactively to build authentic relationships with students, families, school-based staff, and other stakeholders that are centered on safety and support.
  • Provides support for students struggling to meet behavioral expectations, including participation in alternatives to out-of-school suspensions
  • Supports trauma-informed and restorative strategies, provides de-escalation, including engaging students in conversations about peaceful resolution to conflict, and the importance of using social-emotional skills to resolve conflict
  • Works collaboratively with school-based staff, including school administrators, to identify and address safety concerns
  • Responds to and assists in emergencies or crises
  • Supports the implementation of the Student Code of Conduct
  • May serve as a member of school-based threat assessment teams
  • Assists in breaking up physical altercations (when necessary) between students and using appropriate measures to keep them safe during the duration of a physical conflict
  • Renders First Aid when appropriate
  • Prepares incident reports
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)

  • Maintains state certification as established by the DCJS
  • Maintain certification in Division-approved restraint training
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, school leaders, and staff
  • Effective and professional verbal and written communication
  • Strong problem-solving abilities 


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: Experience in juvenile justice, law enforcement, corrections, or social services, preferably with juveniles, or any combination of education and related experience preferred
  • Certification and License: Driver's License, State Certification as established by DCJS

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, and driving. Occasional running, balancing, crouching, kneeling, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, and hazards such as moving vehicles, moving mechanical parts, etc. and/or loud noises. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.
