POSITION: Multi-location Pre-Kindergarten Special Needs Teacher

Upshur County Schools

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Education

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT TERM:  200 days annually, pursuant to WV code § 18-5-45:

SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Upshur County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010

JOB SUMMARY: Provide appropriate instruction to pre-kindergarten age students and insure that the students meet the West Virginia Early Learning Standards.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for planning and implementing the WV Early Learning Standards Framework: Content Standards and Learning Criteria for West Virginia Pre- Kindergarten.
  • Responsible for implementing adopted and supplemental academic programs.
  • Responsible for implementing 21st Century Learning Skills and Technology Tools.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing collaborative models with special education students and teachers.
  • May be responsible for planning and implementing designated co-curricular activities and/or programs at the school such as curricular fairs, awards programs and field trips.
  • Design standards driven instruction and use a balanced assessment approach to guide student learning.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing support for personalized learning for all students to respond to the unique characteristics of learners.
  • Strong working/communication skills with students, parents and peers.
  • Willing to implement any other programs designated by principal, central office and WVDE for school improvement.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and appropriate learning environment.
  • Implement the trauma responsive approach when working with students
  • Fulfill and demonstrate professional growth in the West Virginia High Quality Standards and improvement in professional practice.
  • Includes supervisory and/or other duties as assigned by Principal.

Special Education Teacher: 

  • Diagnose and assess student needs in accordance with county and state special education procedures and with instructional goals and objectives; conduct progress monitoring and benchmark assessments as required; utilizes data in developing and modifying instruction to meet the needs of students.
  • Develop an IEP for each child placed in his/her program in accordance with special education procedures and parent input.
  • Utilize teaching techniques and classroom strategies to accommodate the exceptionality and various learning styles and modes of his/her students.
  • Cooperate with other special education and regular classroom teachers in planning and implementing the IEP for individual students assigned to him/her.
  • Perform assignments related to record keeping, reporting, documentation of parent and agency contacts, IEP development and updates and special education reports.
  • Promote a positive home/school relationship with parents through regular IEP, parent/teacher conferences, regular progress reports and parent training.
  • Assist in the selection of programs, equipment and materials to meet the needs of his/her students and in accordance with the approved IEP's.
  • Utilize furniture, equipment and facilities in the most effective manner to support the instructional program.
  • Interact with students to promote a positive school image to enhance the teaching-learning process.
  • Promote positive community relations through effective communication and involvement of community members.
  • Supervise paraprofessionals, aides and volunteers assigned to his/her classroom.
  • Work with the principal and supervisory staff in identifying and solving problems related to his/her students;
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned by the principal. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specializations and grade levels, pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-2; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a.

Attain and maintain Highly Qualified Teacher Status.
