POSITION: Half-time Health Science Instructor

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT TERM:  200 days annually, pursuant to WV code § 18-5-45: extended employment terms may be establishedby UCBOE

SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Upshur County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010

JOB SUMMARY: Upshur County Schools is seeking a motivated and qualified Health Science Instructor to launch a new high-profile Medical Education (MedEd) pathway, preparing high school students for a career in healthcare. The program is supported by a partnership with WVU Medicine, St. Joseph's Hospital and will require a half day instructor. MedEd provides students with real-world, hands-on learning in clinical and hospital environments. 

As a key instructional leader, you will guide students through a rigorous curriculum that integrates classroom instruction, simulated workplace practices, and supervised clinical experiences. You will collaborate with healthcare professionals and educational partners to ensure students graduate with both the skills and confidence to pursue a career in health care.

The Ideal candidate for this position is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or a certified Medical Assistant with hands on experience. The candidate should have strong communication skills and commitment to student success.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver engaging standards aligned instruction in health science courses.
  • Provide foundational training in both clinical procedures and medical practices.
  • Patient Care
  • Clinical examinations and treatments
  • Medical terminology and transcription
  • Supervise student skill and development and workplace readiness
  • Collaborate with industry partners
  • Guide students in obtaining Personal Care Technician Certification
  • Ensure all program components meet WV Department of Education Standards
  • Includes supervisory and/or other duties as assigned by Principal.
  • The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Option 1: Registered Nurse (RN Pathway)

Hold a valid RN license in WV

Possess a minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing

Have 4,000 clock hours (2 years) of wage-earning, patient-side clinical experience, with the most recent work within the last three years and beyond the training period.

 

Option 2: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA Pathway)

Possess a valid credential from one of the following:

American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

National Association for Health Professional (NAHP)

National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

National Health career Association (NHA)

American Medical Technologist (AMT)

Have clocked 4,000 hours of experience in a medical office or outpatient setting, including clinical procedures and administrative responsibilities

Additional Requirement

Must pass a WV State Police criminal background check

Must complete all training and credentialing required by the WV Department of Education, including:

A Basic Skills Assessment

NOCTI Consent Exams (written and performance)

Completion of WV Technical Institute-approved certificate program (22 hours, including a two-week summer session)

Must obtain and maintain a WV Professional Teaching Certificate in the appropriate CTE area

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
