SUMMARY

Drive shuttle buses, safely transport employees, traveling public and baggage between the airport terminal and parking facilities. Deal courteously with the passengers and represent the Airport in a positive, professional manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Drive passengers and their baggage between the airport terminal and parking facilities. Drive for tours, special evets and during irregular operations.
• Recognize driving safety hazards and use appropriate precautions based on Federal, State and Local guidelines. 
• Follow the directions of the Shuttle Bus Dispatchers, Bus Operations Supervisors and/or Landside Managers.
• Use a 2-way radio to communicate location, emergencies and ask for assistance.
• Provide information about the airport to the public and assist travelers with ground transportation matters.
• Complete related paperwork such as vehicle inspection reports and vehicle work orders. 
• Perform light cleaning inside bus (e.g., clean windows, empty trash, sweep).
• Under some circumstances, assist passengers with baggage.
• Assists passengers in boarding or exiting the vehicle as necessary, including operation of wheelchair lift and wheelchair restraints.
• Other duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES:

Skill in:
• Deal courteously with the public and represent the airport in a positive, professional manner. 
• Speak English clearly enough to be understood over the radio and by passengers. 
• Safely drive any of the shuttle bus models. These include, but are not limited to, 35-foot Diesel, Electric and/or Hybrid Buses. 
• Follow oral and/or written instructions. 
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma/GED and at least 1 year of professional driving experience, or no diploma/GED and 2 years of professional driving experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
• Valid CLD Class A or B with Passenger Endorsement 
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of 2 years passenger transportation experience

• Customer Service experience

GENERAL INFORMATION:

• This position requires the flexibility to be assigned 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift, on any day of the week.

• Calls backs to work may be necessary if the airport is experiencing a major weather or an emergency event.

• The base salary is $24.50 an hour and is eligible for a 2.5% increase to the base salary due to the CDL requirement.

• If assigned a 2nd or 3rd shift, there will also be a 2.5% increase to the base salary for a shift differential.

• Incumbents may be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body via wheelchair. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Physical Requirements:
• Positions in this class typically require grasping, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
• Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking extended periods of time.
• Light to moderate lifting when performing tasks.
• To comply with bus manufacturer specifications, a candidate’s weight may not exceed 350 pounds. 
• Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.
• Must be able to pass the City of Charlotte pre-employment physical.

Sensory Requirements:
• Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for reading and speaking. 
• Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
• Comprehension of written information in work related documents.
• Ability to hear, understand and distinguish speech.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
