Job Description:

Reporting to the Curator of Culture and Community Relations, the Community Engagement Coordinator will be an integral liaison with the Arizona community; our university community of students, staff and faculty; and our international audience of craft artists, scholars and enthusiasts with the goal of increasing the visibility of and access to our craft collections.

Working closely with the Learning & Co-Creation department, this position oversees and manages the activation of the Ceramics Research Center, Print Study Room, and Nelson Fine Arts Center exhibits by planning events and programs. This position will be out in the community fostering relationships and planning programming to activate the various exhibitions and offerings of the ASU Art Museum with a dynamic calendar throughout the year.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will also assist with managing the physical condition, care and display of the collection and archive, in addition to producing and developing interpretive materials and public programs focused on the artworks and archival materials in the Museum’s craft collection and Ceramics Research Center Brickyard facility alongside the Learning Program Specialist.

Position Salary Range:

  • $46,300

Essential Duties:

Outreach & Public Programming:

  • Cultivate partnerships and act as an ambassador for community relations to promote the mission of the ASU Art Museum

  • Lead & coordinate dynamic and relevant educational public programming to reach a broad range of audiences responsive to the ASU Community and the needs of Phoenix communities, while also expanding existing programs reaching historically underserved peoples - including activation of Print Study, Ceramics Research Center, and NFAC.

  • Manage community, and donor visits of Print Study Room, Ceramics Research Center, and NFAC. (Adult tours)

  • Assist with Community of Practice development and coordination with the Curator of Culture and Community Relations.

  • Assist with community partner event planning and coordination.

General Duties

  • Assist with departmental budgeting and expense tracking including contracts, purchasing materials and supplies for events & programs

  • Support and attend museum events

  • Collaborate with guest services, curatorial, preparation, registration, development and communications staff on a regular basis.

  • Work closely with Communications to design signage and other educational and wayfinding materials for the museum.

  • May assist with student worker supervision

  • Attend daily check-ins with direct supervisor, these may be virtual or in person

  • Attend monthly in person, all-staff meetings

  • Actively use & maintain project management tools such as Basecamp

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, Art, or related field

  • One year museum registration or public programming experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in 20th- and 21st-century art, with particular interest in craft and ceramics.

  • Exceptional skills in interpersonal communication, connecting with the public and building relationships with community members and supporters.

  • Demonstrated experience in communications, public speaking and leading public programs.

  • Excellent writing, research and communication skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Strong organizational skills. Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Experience working cross-departmentally and in a team-centered environment.

  • Capacity to take initiative, work thoughtfully, quickly, thoroughly and collegially; and respect the day-to-day process.

Working Environment:

  • Work may shift from typical office-type setting to museum exhibits and storage spaces

  • Repeated adjustments to varied lighting conditions and changing physical space conditions as would be expected in a museum setting; some spaces will have varied climate-controlled conditions

  • May require some evening and/or extended weekend work

  • Occasional evening & weekend work is required

  • Availability after hours to respond to emergency situations pertaining to the CRC facility & collections

  • Ability to lift/pull/push/carry up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to walk moderate distances, stand for long periods of time, stoop, reach, bend at waist
